Star Wars X-Wing Wave 5 preview

Seriously, does the Hype train even have brakes? With wave 4 on the edge of release, Fantasy Flight throws out Wave 5! Weirdly enough though, its only 2 ships. Just a taste of things to come or we finally hitting that wall of what the original Star Wars can offer? Guess time will tell, till then though, lets take a look at these new ships, the YT-2400 and the VT-49 Decimator.

Starting off with the YT-2400, hey! I recognize this ship from the Nintendo 64 game Shadows of the Empire. Never played it sadly, but it was something I wanted to try.

My rental store didn’t have a copy…rental stores, they’re gone now heh. But enough about the past, lets look at this ship. 2 attack, 2 agility, 5 shield and hull. not bad. 360 firing arc like its 1300 counter part. I can dig it.
About same strength wise as the 1300, and more agile, but sadly not as durable. Especially if you take into consideration the Chewie pilot. 1 spot for a co-pilot, 1 missile, but able to take a cannon upgrade. Also a fun note is he can perform Pippy’s favorite maneuver, a barrel roll. That’s not to bad. Don’t see this baby outshining the more famous smuggling ship, but i can already see some dirty things to do with it.

Speaking of dirty, lets look at some of the upgrades, starting with the pilot, Dash Rendar. Again, never played the game, nor have a read anything with him in it but a quick stop over to Wookiepedia tells me he’s done a bunch in the Star Wars universe, so I’m sure fans of him will be happy to know hes got a very strong ability. Ignoring the effects of obstacles? Yes please!

Now granted you’ll want to try to avoid hitting rocks, or the new debris, but with this guy it doesn’t hurt you as much as it would have normally, and with that fat base that’s a hellva good thing. and he’s a level 7 for just 36 points, a bargain too, given the current curve of point cost in this game.

Few upgrades include the title of the ‘Outrunner’ for those who want to full Rendar experience. Being able to use your cannon upgrade with a full 360 arc at the cost of losing your primary attack?

With some good maneuvering and running away you can easily use the Heavy Laser Cannon to pelt away at the enemy. Sounds fun, till I take into account the cost. But hey, ghankey stuff is never cheap is it *cough* Han shot first *cough*.

Also we see a co-pilot for Lando Calrissian. An interesting upgrade for sure as well. Using your action to gamble for a big pay out or nothing at all.

Can’t say this isn’t a interesting idea, but that double blank will leave you feeling like he just sold you out to Vader. Don’t see him being used to often in anything competitive, but for funnies it’ll be, well, fun.

Moving over to the Dark Side we see the VT-49. Not a clue what this is from, but holy cow does it look awesome. Stat wise isn’t anything to sneeze at either. 3 attacks, a whopping 12 hull and 4 shields. Unfortunately no agility, so up close this thing will take a beating.

The 4 shields is hurting my liking to it a bit, as with no dodging those will disappear quickly, leaving your hull open, and a few crits can ruin what fun can be had. But one thing it does have is that awesomeness of the 360 firing arc. So perhaps if you do your stuff right you’ll never have to worry about getting hit.
Also boasting plenty of co-pilot slots and a cannon upgrade as well, you can easily kit this beast out for some dirty work. Perhaps a Han shot first version of this bad boy will appear. Let’s hope not, Empire is strong enough as it, heh.

Upgrade wise we see Mara Jade, a person in the extended universe I actually know stuff about! Gasp, I know. Hand to the Emperor as well as a sudo sith, she grants a ridiculously powerful ability that can cripple your enemy, extremely quickly.

Forcing your enemy to gain stress tokens at the end of combat if they’re at range one? Jeeze. Just, wow. I really am speechless at that to be honest, that’s just dirty. And it doesn’t state a limit, just every enemy ship at range 1 who doesn’t have a stress token gains one. Put her on the Decimator and you can force the enemy into a very bad spot, getting them either stuck in a loop or never gaining an action again. I like it.

Moving on to something less “different” we have the Fleet Officer. Straight forward and handy, giving two friendly ships focus at the cost of a stress. Not to bad, and helpful for those wishing to run some Bombers. Epic play can be nasty with a few of these ladies around and a couple bombers.

All in all another fun looking round of X-wing ships on the way. Curious if this is it for this wave or will there be some smaller ships making an appearance. We’ll see in due time I guess.
