Painting Red With Brown & Best Shade of Black Ever

Today, I’m showing you another way to paint red, but also a way to paint Black so beautiful it’s going to change how you paint black.

We’re painting Captain K, a super great looking model. We’re going to use Secret Weapon paints and brown to paint up to red and make this super realistic versus the hyper tones we’ve been using recently.

Step 1.

We’re starting off with grey because we’re going to build up using brown. We don’t want to use black because that’s more of the pre-shade route.

Step 2.

Secret Weapon Miniature Brown Rust, this s a great paint, it’s well mixed right out of the pot. We’re going to use several thin coats.

Step 3.

Secret Weapon Miniature Red Rust. This is going to give us a very great looking, natural, transition. I like to go up from the boot. I’m not a light scientist, I just go with my heart.

Step 4.

Khador Red and Red Rust, 50/50 Mix. We’re going to hit the highlights, a little bit of top down splash. You can see it’s already coming together.

Step 5.

Now we’re going pure Khador Red. We’re going to subtly slide it n. More thin coats, more layers, little by little. Keep applying to the highlights until it’s as red as you want it to be.

Pro-Tip: you have to do the mid-tones, the 50/50 mix is clutch and keeps the transitions solid.

Step 6.

Game Color Hot Orange and khador red and use it very sparingly, tiny and in the center of the highlights we’ve done.

Step 7.

This Tire Black by Secret Weapon Minis is my favorite color right now, This color is Amazing. It’s not pure black, it’s got a bit of green in it. It’s a game changer. I love this color. We’re going to apply several super thin coats and because we’re spraying it over the grey we don’t want to drown it out and go overboard. Let the natural subtle hues come out.

Pro-Tip: use Air out of the airbrush to speed up the drying process.

Step 8.

Here is where the magic happens. Meridian Blue and Tire Black c-c-combo. We’re going to blue up this black and come in while it’s still wet. We’re going to subtly transition this while it’s still a little wet. You can really see how this paint is 100% more interesting than regular black.
