Multi-Part Plague Marines Kit: Worth it? REVIEW

Are the new multi-part Plague Marines that much better than their easy to build brothers, and why are there only seven to a box?

Death Guard fans, prepare to praise Papa Nurgle for yet another release. This weekend, the seven model Plague Marine Squad kit has dropped alongside the three new Death Guard character releases. These will probably be the last of the Death Guard/Nurgle units we will see for the time being. The only one left to arrive is the Malignant Blight Hauler which we have seen teased but have not been given a date.

Our very own Rob Baer cannot remember a time when he wasn’t unboxing and reviewing Death Guard. All in all, it has been time well spent since these new Death Guard kits are some the most detailed and dynamic kits that we have seen to date from Games Workshop. The kit retails for $50 and there are options for you to take them up to a 10 man squad by combining this kit with an easy-to-build kit or even the Plague Brethren kit.

This kit comes with all the options for customizing the heads, weapons, which arm holds what, and even an option that will have a marine pulling the pin on a blight grenade.

This kit contains three sprues with of highly detailed bits. We have keep referring back tot he detail since it is has been a great series of releases for the Death Guard. The Plague Marine bits maximize the detail per square inch quota. The only drawback is that their poses are static.

The customizations are limited to head and arm options. They have a wide array of weaponry to choose from and you can field a maximum of 20 per squad. They can be fielded with other units/characters and still be a solid choice. Pair them with the Biologus Putrifier, for example, an their blight grenades will be strong and do more damage. Add to this the Blight Bombardment Stratagem and you can wreak havoc on enemy lines.

Plague Marines: $50

Bloated with festering corruption, Plague Marines form the mainstay of the Death Guard, and unlike many Traitor Legions their numbers have only swollen as the millennia have passed. Sworn to Nurgle’s service, Plague Marines have disgusting, rotted bodies that stink of decay. The putrescent slime that oozes from their sores corrodes armour boils away skin, yet despite their horrific disfigurements they are fearsome warriors indeed.

This multi-part plastic kit contains the components necessary to assemble a 7-man squad of Plague Marines. Each is posed dynamically, with the usual Death Guard accoutrements – cracked, rotting armour revealing grasping tentacles, severed heads displayed proudly on belts, backpacks sloshing with unnatural diseases and pipework leading from rebreathers to Nurgle knows what foul concoctions. There’s an Icon of Despair included, so your unit can feature an icon bearer.

These models feature a wide range of weapons and heads, many of which are designed to fit a specific model – there are 8 boltguns, 4 plague knives, 3 bubotic axes, a blight launcher, a plasma gun, a meltagun, a plaguebelcher, a heavy plaguespewer (with backpack), a mace of contagion, a great plague cleaver, a plague flail, a plasma pistol and a bolt pistol. There are 2 weapon options available for the unit Champion: a specific plaguesword and power fist, and there are a total of 16 bare and helmeted heads. 2 specific arms are included for a model holding a blight grenade, with one hand pulling the pin.

This kit comes as 146 components, and is supplied with 7 Citadel 32mm Round bases.
