First 40k, Now Magic: Wizkids Acquires New License

Magic The Gathering MTG

First Warhammer 40k, and now Magic: The Gathering. Wizkids just announced their new license with Wizards of the Coast for Magic.

Wizkids was pleased to announce they will soon be making a new board game and miniatures for Magic: The Gathering. Let’s take a look at what they had to say about their expanding license with Wizards of the Coast.

Wizkids Magic

The licensing relationship between WizKids and Wizards of the Coast is expanding to include products based on Wizard’s flagship title, Magic: The Gathering.  The first products produced under the deal will release next autumn.

The license will allow WizKids to produce a line of pre-painted miniatures based on the Magic: The Gathering IP as well as at least one board game.  The first miniatures planned will feature the ever-popular “token creatures.”  Players will be able to use the minis to represent the creatures during Magic games. WizKids told ICv2, “The Tokens will be pre-painted on 1” bases and feature our high definition sculpting techniques found on our unpainted line.”

The board game under development will transport the experience of Magic into the board game medium.  Players will assume the role of “Planeswalkers” that are exploring Dominaria to discover mana sources and build up their collection of spell cards. “The board game does not share rules or components with MTG: Arena of the Plansewalkers,” the WizKids representative told ICV2 (see “WotC Shares ‘Magic’ Board Game Title, Art”). “The board game has its own unique set of mechanics set in the Magic world and has a decidedly Euro feel to it.”

“We’re introducing a long-time, beloved brand to an all new medium,” said WizKids president Justin Ziran. “Producing high-quality miniatures and bringing to market captivating board games is at the heart of WizKids.  We could not be more excited to extend our relationship with Wizards of the Coast with Magic: The Gathering.”

The two companies have a long-standing relationship, with WizKids producing a series of licensed Dungeons & Dragons products, most recently announcing its third Monster Menagerie collectible series (see “WizKids Brings Giants Back in ‘Monster Menagerie III’”).

So it looks like fans of Magic: The Gathering will soon be getting a new way to play. Wizkids will be producing a new line of painted miniatures to go alongside at least one board game. The painted miniatures will be on 1″ bases and will feature the token creatures from the popular collectible card game. The new game is currently under development and will have its own unique set of mechanics.

Wizkids also recently acquired a license with Games Workshop and have plans to put out two new board games. But that’s not all they’re planning on doing…

Wizkids Games Workshop

October 19, 2017 – Hillside, NJ – WizKids, the leader in high-quality pre-painted miniatures and established board games, today revealed a multi-year partnership with acclaimed fantasy miniatures company, Games Workshop. The new partnership will extend the Warhammer 40,000 universe IP across multiple categories, including, Dice Building Games™, board games and more!

The multi-year deal will span numerous categories and include the most iconic Warhammer 40,000 characters and more. WizKids will create two new board games, along with dice games based in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, with additional plans to republish classic board games Fury of Dracula and Relic.

Wizkids is definitely going to have their hand fulls with a lot of new board games coming our way for two very popular titles. But, is this all they have planned for now? Or can we expect to hear more from Wizkids?
