A Neat New Way To Paint Resin Bases

Get ready to learn some awesome new basing techniques with Jack of Clubs Painting as he shows you how to paint bases super good with no washes needed.

This tutorial features some cavalry bases for some Ork Bikers. These bases are from Elrik’s Hobbies, coming from their city ruins line. The color theme for these bases is desert city, featuring golden yellow as the base paint to make a warm color tone.

The base coat is a red-brown primer that makes the yellow color pop. A gold-brown is the next color over the red-brown that mixes these colors together to add to the desert and arid effect. Jack leaves a little of the brown sandstone, focusing on the city tiles.

The idea is to keep our yellows warm and earthy to avoid a striking yellow that would take away from the desert city theme.

Once the base brown and yellows are added, Jack singles out tiles on the base to create a checkered pattern. Start in the center of the tile and work your way out to the edge, but leave a little space to make room for more brown.

An ivory and golden yellow color is added to the alternating tiles to create the buildup of color.

The other tiles that were not painted with the golden yellow are painted with a base black color. Making lines from the outside of the tiles and working your way to the inside will help keep your lines crisp and avoid mistakes. Take your time and make sure all of your colors are dry before moving on to the next step.

For the final touch, a somber gray color alternates a cool color between the warmer ones. A little goes a long way, so build up your gray color slowly. Highlight the rocks under the tiles with that gray before moving on to your drybrush step.

Using a khaki color for your drybrush adds a dusty theme to our desert base and adds the final polish. Don’t forget to color the rim of the base black to define a clear end point of your base.
