Relive 15 years of changces to Warhammer 40k, as we look back at the White Dwarf Index Astartes features from the early 2000’s.
If you like to read books, especially about the legends and back-story to the Warhammer 40,000 universe, these are for you. From fluff and lore, to the building blocks of the Horus Heresy it’s all contained within the Index Astartes holy tomes.
These four books are all collections of articles from White Dwarf from 2001 to about 2005. Now the Index Astartes has been rebooted for 2019 inside White Dwarf, and features the lore on Primaris Marines, expanding on the existing fluff of the original 18 Space Marine Legions and Chapters and the Great Rift and the Ultima Founding and all that great 40k fluff stuff.
But for now, let’s go back to the roots of modern Warhammer 40,000!
Index Astartes I was originally officially collected in 2002 and contained articles and fluff from the great writers of the Warhammer lore. Venerable artists and sculptors from Citadel have also been featured with some articles and collections, as well as, the painting team at the time.
The first Legion, the Dark Angels, is also contained within, logging their backstory and lore and even features the Children of the Emperor. The side story of the Cleansing of Laeran is included with the Children of the Emperor, detailing the cleansing of the lizard men and how this lead to the corruption of the Emperor’s Children, especially detailing how Fulgrim came into possession of the daemonic sword. This small piece of fluff predates even the Fulgrim novel, so the Index Astartes tome was full of Easter eggs and nuggets of lore, even back then in 2002.
There are even rules featured in the Index Astartes, especially the 3.5 Edition Chaos Space Marines codex, which may have been the greatest yet for Chaos. Multiple pages of content are spread throughout the Index Astartes to keep you interested in what you may come across next in the backstory of Warhammer 40,000.
