Two more off-meta army lists emerged in this 9th Edition 40k tournament over the weekend- take a look at this homebrew list!
9th Edition’s meta is still settling, but some players are taking lists with units that nobody was expecting. Check out this awesome homebrew list that emerged in a tournament over the weekend. They didn’t do too bad and this just goes to show that it’s more about the general’s skill than what you play.
Top Homebrew 40k Army List: January 2nd Heroes’ Retreat RTT
Thanks to Best Coast Pairings we are able to look back at the event as if we were there ourselves.
Heroes’ Retreat RTT: Noah Miles- World Eaters
The first homebrew is a list that every Khorne chaos player has thought about but unfortunately may have been turned away due to lacking 2 entire phases.
This list a pure World Eaters battalion, with a Dark Apostle Exalted Champion, and none other than Kharn the Betrayer. These three characters have a great suite of buffs for any style of in your face, beat-em-up, melee chaos list. You’ll get a reroll of all hits, all wounds, and the apostle gives you a second hit roll aura on a 3+ every turn. If if the apostle prayers fail, you’ll have plenty of rerolls for the carnage further down the list.
All of those reroll auras are for the Troops! Four squads of 8 Berserkers, make for 32 very angry marines. Double melee options mean they go all-in on melee and nothing else, but that’s alright because once they do get in melee, they will shred whatever they touch.
For Elites, Noah went for even more fluffy options and brought 8 Red Butcher upgraded Terminators with claws. This means the squad will have over 50 attacks in melee, because they fight twice as Butchers, rerolling wounds rolls, and can deep strike in! Opponent beware.
There are also 4 Rhinos, to transport a mix of the Characters and Berserkers, while the Butchers chill and deep strike.
The final part of the list is a Khorne Lord of Skulls. This is the only real ranged unit in the list, and funnily enough, if it’s within 1″ of Kharn by shooting phase round one, it will get to reroll all hit rolls, even shooting! If this can get a few good shots off, it can obliterate targets, the main issue is protecting it. However, with the aggressive nature of the list, the opponent will likely have their hands full.
Not to mention, this is before what some expect to be widespread buffs to Daemon engines, that is, assuming GW follows the treatments they gave to Death Guard…
Heroes’ Retreat RTT: Aaron Kelman- Imperium
Almost half the list is in the first detachment of two Moiraxes and a Knight Valiant. All three of these will do work, however, the Valiant the main ranged heavy-hitter, and will be the focal point of the list.
Aaron paired the knights with a Cadian Brigade. Starting off with the standard 3 company commanders. These are very cheap and give guardsmen orders that provide good buffs when you need them like rerolls, or even allow them to advance and shoot.
Moving onto Troops, there are a total of six 10 man Infantry Squads with a mix of specials weapons sprinkled in. There are also two squads of 5 Scions running meltas some a touch of additional firepower over normal infantrymen.
The first Elite is an Astropath, who can deny cover saves, has a small chance to cast smite, plus a deny the witch roll.
Finishing Elites, there are 3 Special Weapon Squads, each taking Meltas for anti-armor and they are generally good at killing primaris marines.
Fast Attacks have three Scout Sentinels with flamers to help with weaker chaff units. Lastly, for Heavy Support, there are 3 squads of 3 Heavy Weapons Squads. Two have Mortars for the volume of shots and one has lascannons for some more antiarmor options.
This list doesn’t seem too special, but it has a certain hint of old 8th edition lists, plus none of these lists have been doing too well, so it’s good to see Aaron use it to some success!
Overall these lists offer a little bit of a different approach but we like them because of their all-in on an aspect of their faction in a response to the meta. Even better they got great results from the players who piloted them! It’s also very encouraging when a player is able to play a widely considered “underpowered” army or list style so effectively.
