Final Standings:
1st Place: Tyler Devries Astra Militarum / Imperial Guard Army Lists
At the 2024 Renegade Open, Tyler’s Astra Militarum army list showed that even in a galaxy filled with superhuman warriors and alien monstrosities, sometimes good ol’ grit, tanks, and a dash of strategic brilliance are all you need. Tyler’s list wasn’t just an example of the Guard holding the line—it was a full-on offensive that combined firepower, durability, and a few legendary figures to secure victory.
At the head of the list were Gaunt’s Ghosts, an iconic unit of sneaky, gritty lone operatives who excel at staying alive and causing chaos where it matters most. They brought a unique blend of stealth and sharpshooting to the table, making them a perfect asset for holding objectives or disrupting the enemy’s plans.
Backing them up was the powerhouse Lord Solar Leontus, arguably the best model in the faction. Leontus is the kind of commander who doesn’t just inspire his troops—he practically guarantees success with his stellar stats and top-tier abilities. When Leontus is on the field, you know the Astra Militarum isn’t just surviving—they’re thriving.
A Platoon Command Squad rounded out the leadership team, providing vital orders and offering a decent set of bodies to keep the chain of command intact. With these leaders at the helm, the army functioned like a well-oiled machine, delivering calculated strikes and maintaining discipline in the chaos of battle.
Tyler’s list leaned heavily on the Guard’s greatest strength: tanks. Three Tank Commanders formed the core of his armored force, each one delivering orders while unloading devastating firepower on anything foolish enough to stand in their sights. With three full-sized tanks on the field, Tyler’s list had enough firepower to level a city block (or a Chaos Daemon horde).
Three units of Catachan Jungle Fighters brought a no-nonsense, close-combat vibe to the list, acting as the perfect frontline units. These fighters are the kind of soldiers who laugh in the face of danger (and then punch it in the face for good measure).
For mobility, Tyler brought along two Chimeras, versatile transports that not only ferried troops where they needed to go but also provided solid anti-armor shots. The Chimeras added a layer of flexibility to the list, ensuring that Tyler’s army could respond quickly to any threat.
A Hellhound added some fiery flair to the mix, delivering brutal ranged firepower and dealing with threats up close. A single Leman Russ Battle Tank brought even more firepower, because, well—can you ever have too much in an Astra Militarum army? Spoiler: you cannot.
Adding some beef to the list were three units of Ogryns, the hulking brutes who act as the army’s walking walls of muscle. These durable infantry models aren’t just there to soak up hits—they’ll happily dish them out too. Whether holding objectives or countering enemy charges, Ogryns are the big-boned backbone of the Astra Militarum.
Finally, no Astra Militarum list would be complete without some elite firepower, and Tyler delivered with three units of Tempestus Aquilons. These special forces-style units brought precision, power, and deep-striking versatility to the table. With their excellent weapons and the ability to drop in where they were needed most, the Aquilons added an unpredictable edge to Tyler’s otherwise straightforward strategy.
2nd Place: Andrew Moe – Death Guard Army Lists
3rd Place: Craig Parker – Tyranids Army Lists
The result was a victory that didn’t just showcase the strength of the Astra Militarum—it reminded everyone why they’re the Emperor’s hammer. Whether you’re a fan of tanks, troops, or just good ol’ battlefield strategy, Tyler’s list had it all. And in true Guard fashion, it didn’t just hold the line—it crushed everything in its path.
These top army lists from The Renegade Open 2024 GT saw some fantastic contenders in Death Guard and Tyranids army lists, but Tyler’s mix of leadership, ranged firepower, and durability stood out. Regardless, if you’re a veteran player or just getting started playing Warhammer 40k, there’s a lot to learn from these top-tier tactics and compositions.
