GW Hiring Another 40k Game Developer

Games Workshop is hiring another Warhammer 40k game developer, because rules don’t write themselves, and changes need to happen!

Turns out, those dataslates, balance passes, and rulebooks covered in red pen don’t just magically appear—GW is hiring another Warhammer 40k Game Developer, and the timing couldn’t be juicier.

Yep, while we’ve all been arguing about whether towering units should see through walls or if another indirect fire NERF is coming, Games Workshop is busy expanding the team that actually makes those decisions real.

The new hire will join the hallowed halls of Nottingham HQ and help shape the future of the game—unit stats, faction mechanics, codex content, maybe even that terrain interaction no one understands but pretends to.

GW Needs a New 40k Developer

This isn’t just about rolling dice and moving little plastic soldiers. It’s about crafting the rules that fuel one of the biggest tabletop ecosystems in the world. That means staying ahead of balance issues, delivering on the promise of variety and fairness (or at least trying to), and dealing with the occasional online meltdown when someone’s favorite army gets NERFED

In short, GW wants someone who can write rules and read a spreadsheet. You’ve got to juggle fun, clarity, and balance—without accidentally making Chaos Spawn the most efficient unit in the game. Again.

Here’s the pertinent info about the job:

With a deep knowledge of the rules and passion for the lore and setting, we will look to you to support the design team to conduct playtesting, analyse rules changes, and gather feedback from the competitive player community. Staying informed about the current metagame and competitive trends, you will engage with the Warhammer 40,000 player community by attending tournaments and events.

Collaborating with other designers, you will help create new battle packs and other rules publications that challenge and inspire players. This will require working closely with other departments, and providing peer reviews and feedback to ensure rules integration and consistency across all aspects of the game.

If you’ve got a sharp design brain, a love for the hobby, and a tolerance for internet feedback that includes phrases like “literally unplayable” and “codex creep strikes again,” this might be your moment.

For the rest of us, however, it’s a reminder that every rule we argue about was written by someone doing their best in a sea of stratagems, edge cases, and very loud Space Marine players

  • Location: You’ll be working full-time, on-site at the glorious UK HQ in Nottingham—no remote lurking from your hobby cave on this one.
  • Contract: This gig is a 12-month fixed-term contract. Plenty of time to shake things up, scribble in the margins, and maybe sneak in your dream stratagem.
  • Closing Date: Get your application in before the clock strikes midnight (UK time) on Sunday, 18th May 2025. No rerolls after that.

Send them a letter or a video—dealer’s choice—telling them why this job has your name written on it. This is your chance to show that you actually get what we’re after, not just that you’ve read a codex cover to cover (though that’s cool too).
