Conquest-para-bellum-gamePrepare for battle, budget warriors; here is how you can build a 2000 Point Conquest Nord army as cheaply as possible!

Continuing our dive into Conquest, I have covered my initial thoughts on the game, which you can check out here. Then you can check out a faction-specific post about each unit that currently has models for that faction (Nords in this case) here.

In this article, I will round out the Nords information with how I would build a Nord’s army as cheaply as possible and why they are a great starting army for getting into the game.

Building a 2000 Point Conquest Nord Army

Conquest two player setThere are two sets that are great entry points for the Nords faction and are relatively good value in terms of points of models for cost. Let’s start by getting the one-player Nords starter set, and then, because I think the trolls really shine with an additional row, another box of them for this warband.

*Writer’s note, this is using the new one-player Nord starter set to be released May 26th, 2023, not the older one that has been discontinued. Make sure you check which one you are purchasing before hitting the buy button. The older one is also a good value; just be ready to paint a lot of raiders.

One Player Starter Set and a Box of Trolls: Cost $190

  • 1 Blooded 100 Points Infantry Medium:
    • 3 Ugr: 150 Points (Mainstay, Brute Medium)
    • 3 Fenr Beastpack: 130 Points (Restricted, Cavalry Medium)
    • 3 stands of Stalkers: 160 Points (Mainstay, Infantry Light)
    • 6 stands of Trolls with Standard: 370 Points (Mainstay, Infantry Medium)
    • Total 910 Points

This is a great starting point in that you are getting a swift light ranged unit with the stalkers, two fast-moving flanking units with the Ugr and Beastpack, and then a block of regenerating hard-hitting troops (think anvil) with the trolls. Overall, it’s basically half your army.

This is without any upgrades to your bloodied as well, which I would run with that block of trolls to maximize their potential.

Building It Out further

Nord Conquest Warband 2Next, you’ll want to find someone looking to offload (or split) the Two player starter set that is currently the hotness. Most people want the city-state half, so you shouldn’t have a huge issue finding someone to want to sell the Nord half on Facebook Marketplace or eBay (usually between 60-80 bucks).

In addition to this, I will add another stand of bow chosen because they are one of if not the best-ranged units in Conquest right now, and bringing two units of them in turn one helps you dictate a game.

Nord Half of the Two Player Starter Set a box of Bow Chosen and a box of Huskarls: Cost $155

  • 1 Knungyr 120 Points Infantry Medium:
    • 3 stands of Bow Chosen: 210 Points (Mainstay, Infantry Light)
    • 3 stands of Bow Chosen: 210 Points (Mainstay, Infantry Light)
    • 6 stands of Huskarls with standard: 285 Points (Mainstay, Infantry Medium)
    • 1 Mountain Jotnar: 170 Points (Restricted, Monster Heavy)
    • Total 995 Points

Where your other warband will excel with scoring with medium units, this is the warband that is going to let you dictate the flow of the game from the get-go. The light-ranged units are going to dominate the board and remove any light threats your opponent will throw out. It will also let you move your reinforcement line forward so that your heavy can come in outside your reinforcement zone and get in the action sooner.

Your bow chosen can take out medium and sometimes even heavy units as well, so don’t sell them short; make sure you keep your distance from them and use the trolls and Huskarls to take any charges from your opponent.

  • Konungyr
    • Aspect of the Eagle: Free
    • The Horn of Hjoldgar: 20 Points
    • Marksmanship: 15 Points
  • Bloodied
    • Aspect of the Wolf: Free
    • Jarngreipr: 20 Points
    • Headhunter: 20 Points
  • Total army points 1980

Your Konungyr will boost the bow-chosen unit he first joins and help keep them alive vs. your opponent’s ranged attacks. While you blooded is going to stick with the trolls and use his dueling armor to withstand any character threats that come at him.

Even heavy units will struggle to punch through a block of 6 trolls. Don’t sleep on a block of 6 Huskarls either, as they can also create a nice wall for your archers to shoot around. Where this army will struggle might be towards the end game, so try and build up a lead. As your opponent brings on heavier troops, you must withstand them.

Again use the bow chosen wisely as they can out-gun most things and will tear through even heavily armored troops.

There you have it a 2000 point Conquest Nord army at slightly under $350. That is a pretty decent army that you can field and play with pretty quickly with a nice mix of normal “Viking” like troops and your classic fantasy type of wolves, trolls, etc.

Currently on the painting table: 8 Raiders (50% completed)
