Painting Dankhold Troggoth: eBay Miniature Rescues Tutorial

eBay Rescues FeatureeBay Miniature Rescues is back with another painting tutorial video- this time he’s saving a Dankhold Troggoth from extinction!

eBay Miniature Rescues is a unique channel that shows you how to take beat up, damaged minis, and restore them to their fullest potential! It’s a relatively new channel on YouTube and it’s super fun to watch what Casey is able to do with some once hopeless miniatures. He has a ton of great videos, which you can check out here!

This week though, he shows us how you can save a Troggoth from the brink of extinction!

Painting Dankhold Troggoth: eBay Miniature Rescues Tutorial

Fist stage Dankhold TroggothTo start, he sands the mini down and fills all the cracks and lines. He uses Milliput to fill all the gaps and pushes it in with the end of a paintbrush.

Making the Base

Troggoth baseOnce the Milliput is dry he makes the base for the mini. He lays down some cork and then glues on some rocks. To finish it off he throws some sand on top of everything.

Priming

Priming Stage TroggothHe primes the mini with some Stynylrez Gray and just gets good coverage on the whole mini. Then he does a Liquitex White spray from the top down. Leaving the darker recesses and lower half of the mini darker. Just to note he does this stage with the airbrush but you can prime it with a spray can and then just do the white with an airbrush.

Air Brushing

Air Brushing stageHe wants this to have a bright scheme so for colors he uses the Golden High Flow Acrylics. He starts with a purple through the airbrush, he lays this down over most of the body. Then with the blue, he will push the shadows. Because this is so thin it will blend naturally with the other colors. Then he uses a vibrant pink to really push the highlights and bring the color out. Finally, with the Golden High Flow paints, he hits a little green on the base and the stone hammer. Get out your Vallejo Dwarf skin and do a quick top-down highlight on most of the skin.

Washing

Oil WashTo bring the colors together and bring out the contrast he is going to use two oil washes together, red mixed with a hint of gray. Once the model is dry he takes some Q-tips and cleans away any excess from the flat areas. This brings some color back and leaves it in the deeper recesses.

Working on the Base

Base and washTo bring out the color and blend it with the model better he lays down Vallejo pigment powder and then pigment fixer.

Highlighting

Highlighting Stage 1Starting with Kislev Flesh he starts hitting all the skin highlights. Then the closer he gets to the head he starts highlighting with Pallid Wych Flesh and finishes that off with a light drybrush of Kislev Flesh. Then he hits the loincloth and ropes with Zandri Dust. Finally, he does some final highlights with some Vallejo Cold white.

metal and HammerFor the hammer, he does a mix of Rhinox Hide and Skrag Brown and just gets a good blend going. For the metallics, he uses Vallejo copper and aluminum. Since there aren’t many metallics he just does a couple of simple passes. Starting with copper, then slowly lightens it up and does highlights with aluminum.

Highlighting Stage 2To highlight the wood, ropes, and rocks, he does a wash with Agrax Earth shade. Once dry he highlights the areas again with the original colors to bring some of the colors back. Lastly, he hits the base with a white highlight.
