The First Warhammer 40k Leagues of Votann Rules!

As promised, we can now dive into the new rules previewed for the Leagues of Votann, aka the Squats, from Warhammer Community.

Could this be due to a rigorous martial tradition, or a bit of technological assistance from the Votann? The answer is likely somewhere in between.

Combined with solid void-hardened armour and their knack for sticking around in close combat, these guys march in squads of up to 20 with high-tech guns blazing before charging in to mop up survivors.

Right out the gate, these new guys are pretty similar to Primaris Assault Intercessors as far as statlines are concerned, with the only major difference being -1″ movement and -1 wound in comparison.

Additionally, GW has dropped hints about an ability to stay in close combat longer than you’d expect for a 1 wound model, so it’ll be interesting to see the squad’s abilities!

league of votann Hearthkyn warrior squad leaderThe Theyn is the Squad leader of the Hearthkyn, and with an extra wound, attack, and leadership, he is exactly what is respected of a squad leader! It’s slightly better but still squarely in the same realm of power level as the rest of their squad.

einherjarWargames Atlantic is in the works of making their own Death Fields game, so you can use these for that as well as 40k alternatives! Either way, you get 24 models for $35, so really hard to beat that! Plus, we’ll be surprised if the GW ones get ten for less than $50.

Wargames Atlantic Einherjar: $35

einherjar 3The box has a really cool story on the back about how they are plucked the warriors from Earth and are taken to a literal Valhalla! But more importantly, they have a very similar feel to the new Squats we’ve seen.

einherjar spruesYou get all kinds of bits in this kit and they just make such amazing alternative minis. Come on, 24 minis for $35 is almost unheard of now! They also give you all kinds of options like flamers, comms, grenade launchers, and a ton more.

einherjar 4You can see they have great detail when put together and have a similar feel in weaponry and look to the new Leagues of Votann! The torsos are also pre-assembled so building these are super easy. For basically $1.50 a mini, they are an amazing value.

The only thing is, they don’t come with bases, but most people have tons of those laying around, or you can get a whole bunch for super cheap in bundles online.

einherjar 5The squad leader is also great-looking and just a really cool figure with his armaments!

einherjar sizeThese are perfectly sized to be squats! While we don’t know the rules quite yet, you can never go wrong with some troops, and they match up closely enough that no one should complain, and you could always just grab one from GW to mix in some of the parts.

  • Pistol and Heat Hammer for Commander
  • 25mm Round Bases

Forge Fathers Thor Pattern Iron Ancestor: $30

Men of Iron

With rumors of Men of Iron possibly coming along with the Leagues of Votann, this would make the perfect alternative!

Hammerfist Drop Team: $35

Forge fathers 4While we don’t know quite yet what type of heavy infantry they will have, these make cool alternatives just from the start. Plus, we expect them to get something a little heavier, so these could be perfect!
