9th Edition Release Date & Psychic Awakening Conclusion?

9th Edition 40k rumorsNow that the 9th Edition 40k cat is out of the bag, there are a ton of rumors out there about the release date and the conclusion of Psychic Awakening.

So GW shook the internet with the announcement of 9th Edition 40k recently. Some key things we know about it so far is that all of our old books are going to be compatible with the new rules set. However, looking at the timing of it all, we’re left wondering when everything will officially drop.

In case you forgot, we’ve still got Psychic Awakening: Pariah and War of the Spider to get through as well.

9th Edition Release Date & Psychic Awakening Conclusion?

9th Edition Box Set Rumors

primaris 9th edition previewLooking at the Box Set rumors… We’ve talked previously on how things are really sizing up to be a Box Set release along with a brand new 9th Edition. But some rumors are also beginning to pop up revolving around a Box Set.

salt pile Here are the rumors:

  • Pre-orders should go up June or July and the Box Set will release sometime before summer is over.
  • The Set is also rumored to be $150.

The pre-order date seems more believable than the price if we’re speaking truthfully. While it’s totally possible to see a Box Set go for $150, there’s a real chance it could be higher as we’ve just seen GW announced a third price hike within the past two years.

Although, the key takeaway here is that the pre-orders are saying sometime either this month or next.  Which would put the Box Set in-line with the new set of rumors from above.

Dates Seem To Be Shifting…

scarlet rulebook 5Months ago, we saw this mysterious product called The Scarlet Rulebook hit the ports and we had no idea what it could’ve been. We know now that it was GW’s way of letting it slip under the radar until they wanted to officially reveal 9th Edition 40k. However, once we saw it hit the US ports, we also saw that the book was scheduled to go on sale on June 23, 2020.

If you look at the rumors above, they are saying 9th Edition (which would have to have a freestanding rulebook) drop in the last week of July.

But why the change in dates? Well since Covid-19 a lot of things have already shifted around date wise from Games Workshop:

daemonifuge amazonFor Daemonifuge, it looks like the release date has also been pushed back, again, from May 26, to June 23rd, and now July 7th. Because of everything going on in the world, Daemonifuge might have been pushed back into July, putting this book in a position of releasing just before 9th Edition drops. That honestly makes sense as the characters in Pariah are from the Daemonifuge illustrated series that came out 20 years ago.

We Can’t Forget About Previous Rumors & War of the Spider

psychic awakening war of the spiderBefore the new rumored schedule of July releases emerged, there were other rumors that are still carrying weight even before 9th Edition was announced. We saw these rumors come from BoLS months ago:

  • About four faction supplement books are left before the new edition arrives. (probably once Psychic Awakening concludes)
  • Endless Psychic Powers are coming. Similar to Endless Spells in AoS. (This would make sense to see with the new “awakening” of Psykers across real-space).
  • The Endless Psychic Powers will be coming in a small box set similar to Malign Sorcery in AoS when Endless Spells were first introduced.
  • Flyers might be getting a total rework on how they operate.

While all of the points in the rumor are interesting, the key one to note is the top line. These rumors were written back in Decemeber 2019 before all of the world’s businesses came to a halt for a short time. Moving forward, we know that we still have War of the Spider, which will cover four factions in 40k. War of the Spider could be a “closing the book” on everything Psychic Awakening and 9th Edition could be the next big thing to follow.

Everything is Compatible & Releases Can Come Quicker Than Expected

9th edition release rumor dateWe know that all of the books are totally compatible with 9th Edition so even if War of the Spider was snuck in some time for the 3rd week of July, it’s not like the rules inside the book would become obsolete one week later. Plus, we’ve seen GW drop two Psychic Awakening Books within a week of each other for Blood of Baal and Ritual of the Damned.

Chances are, that War of the Spider may drop in June, followed by Pariah, and 9th in July now.

With dates shifted slightly, the safest course of action so far would be to start putting the end of June through the end of July on your radar. We know GW is beginning to clear the log jam of releases so things might drop quicker than we anticipate. On this is for sure, however.

We will know something is coming right around the corner once we start seeing official rules previewed.

What do you think about the months ahead for releases? Do you think we could be playing 9th Edition before August? How much will a Box Set cost?
