RUMORS: Free Faction Terrain Coming to 9th Edition 40k

chaos-wal-hor-space-marines-word-bearers-dark-apostleNew rumors have emerged on the web mentioning some elements of Age of Sigmar coming to 9th Edition 40k like free faction terrain! Check this out!

Spotted on a Twitch Stream from the Honest Wargamer, they’ve mentioned free terrain for all factions in games of 40k. If you play Age of Sigmar, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about. But there are a few points we should dissect.

Bold New Rumors Mention Free Faction Terrain Coming to 40k

What I do think needs to be expanded on a little bit more is the rumor mill has started about free terrain for all factions.

We’re not entirely sure where they heard the rumor first. However, it’s beginning to make rounds across the web. Faction terrain is one of those elements of Warhammer that people either love or hate.

In Age of Sigmar, the faction terrain is free points-wise and usually gives a small buff to the army. It’s definitely not busted, but being that it’s free there’s no real reason not to take it. However, in 40k, terrain currently still costs points. We hardly ever see people take terrain in 40k for that reason. People would simply rather put points into a unit that can actually kill stuff rather than having a piece of terrain take up a detachment and be a possible target for the opponent. With that said, we’ve recently seen a big push on GW’s part to make faction terrain more appealing. Especially for Sisters of Battle and Orks.

Coming from a business standpoint, faction terrain in 40k is probably one of the least-popular kits just because of the reasons we mentioned above. It costs points. In order to sell more, they could easily make faction terrain free with a reboot of 40k in the new Edition and then players would have no reason NOT to bring one in-game.

Where Conflict Could Happen

kill team arenaRight away, we know that conflict could turn up with factions that don’t have access to terrain. 40k is by far the most competitive game under GW’s wing. With events like the Las Vegas Open bringing in over 1,000 people, the competitive scene in 40k is quite strong. With that said, if GW does make faction terrain free, then the factions that don’t have their own form of terrain yet (which is a majority in 40k) would suffer.

Depending on how competitive people really want to get, we could see the scales tip and everyone flock to factions that do have access to terrain. Just to have that competitive edge. Faction terrain in AoS is common. However, there are still factions that don’t have any. Historically speaking, AoS isn’t nearly as competitive as 40k. But where we can look to AoS as a guide, it seems like GW wouldn’t be in any real rush to get faction terrain out to 40k factions. Mainly because it’s been years since faction terrain started in AoS and there are still a bunch of factions that don’t have anything.

Could This Shipment of Terrain Be Linked?

commodity components port scry AS SEEN ON SPIKEY BITSOne thing to note is that we also recently saw a massive shipment of Kill Team terrain hit the ports a while back. We’re not exactly sure if this has anything to do with the faction terrain rumor (because who wants a pile of cranes as their terrain), however, it seems like something is going on behind the scenes in the terrain department for 9th.

Overall, this looks to be pretty controversial. Assuming the rumor is true, giving some factions exclusive access to an element to the game over others could be devastating to the meta.

What do you think about free faction terrain in 40k? Do you think that shipment of terrain from above is disguised as Kill Team goods but will actually be for factions in 40k?
