Magic the Gathering: Reserve List Here to Stay

Magic The Gathering MTGThe Magic the Gathering Reserve list looks like it’s here to stay, which has been a point of contention for a long time.

If you don’t know, the reserve list is a list of cards that they promised to never be reprinted. This was initially done as a way to keep the collectibility of the cards high and the integrity of the dollar figures intact. Initially (like the first few years), there wasn’t too much issue with the game, but nearly 30 years later, and with so many cards getting bought up over lockdown, it has become an issue.

magic the gathering jace Wizards of the Coast to GW: Hold my BeerPlayers have been against the list even almost since its inception because it mainly just creates higher prices for the consumer, often that Wizards doesn’t even benefit from. We understand the idea, it makes the game truly collectible. However, if you just want to play Commander or just like the old cards, it gets expensive so fast.

Head Designer Mark Rosewater confirmed that the list is here to stay in a recent Tumblr Q&A. He mentioned he tried pretty hard to get rid of it, but that idea seems to have been squashed hard as he mentioned, just know it will be around for a while.

Here’s what Rosewater had to say about the possible banishing of the RL:

I spent years trying, I don’t think it’s going away. I can’t go into details, but I think you all will be mentally happier if you accept that it’s not going to change.

So if you were hoping for a change anytime soon, don’t hold your breath as the reserve list is here to stay for the foreseeable future…

Do you wish they would just get rid of the list? Do you like the idea it makes the game more collectible?
