More rumors today about the next edition of 40k, and how GW may be scrambling to fix the game we all know and love

First it was 6th edition dying on the vine, and now 7th edition is “too clunky”. Checkout the latest on the long and winding road to a new edition of Warhammer 40k

rumors

Here’s the latest, courtesy of BoLS:

Industry professionals tell BoLS the following:

  • GW is borrowing some rules mechanics form Age of Sigmar to pull over into the new edition.
  • Look for an emphasis on ease of play, especially for new players.
  • Look for the variable-stats-based-on-damage rule mechanic seen on some Age of Sigmar monsters to make it’s way into the Grimdark.
  • Look for Psychics to be greatly simplified.
  • Army construction will not be constrained.
  • Some version of AoS Warscrolls will make their way into the game.
  • The game will retain it’s gameplay and tactical depth, and not come anywhere near AoS’s tiny 4 pages of rules.
  • GW’s design goal is to maintain 40K’s depth of tactics and play, while speeding up playtime and removing needless detail.

SO there are some good indicators here about where GW’ may be going. First off Simplified psychics reminds me of the enumeration phase from the Prospero game, very easy there right off the bad. Plus we know some of the AoS mechanics work based on game play for the last year or so as well.

But I think at the end of the day 40k players do crave a level of complexity that has to be preserved as well. The d12,10,8 rules set from Prospero is pretty clutch, and could easily simplify the shooting and wound mechanics while also accounting for cover as well.  Add in a splash of +1 to your save or +1 to hit like in AoS and I think we may be looking at a potential 8th rules set that is not clunky at all.

All will be revealed soon enough.

LEGO maniac and scale model hobbyist in the 80s turned miniature wargamer and trading card player ever since. He’s played every edition of Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Fantasy (since 5th Edition), but Titans of all sizes will always be his favorite! It’s even rumored that his hobby vault rivals the Solemnance Galleries, containing rulebooks filled with lore from editions long past, ancient packs of black-bordered Magic Cards, and minatures made of pewter and resin.
