White Dwarf 500 Artwork Sells For a Ton of Cash!

Johan Grenier white dwarf 500Games Workshop has broken from tradition with the commissioning and subsequent sale of the White Dwarf 500 artwork for a reported “significant price!”

For the 500th edition of the magazine, Games Workshop decided to do something special: they enlisted the talents of fantasy illustrator Johan Grenier to create a stunning traditional painting for the cover. This decision not only broke from GW’s usual practices but supposedly sold at a” significant price” for original artwork in the industry!

Games Workshop has enlisted the talents of fantasy illustrator Johan Grenier to create a stunning traditional painting for the cover for the 500th edition of White Dwarf magazine.
The artwork features Grombrindal, aka the White Dwarf, standing proudly under a tree, overseeing a fierce battle alongside a group of fearless Dwarf Slayers and Thunderers. Grenier now joins the esteemed company of artists such as Adrian Smith, David Gallagher, Wayne England and John Sibbick, who have all brought Grombrindal to life on the cover of White Dwarf.
In a departure from their usual practices of using digital art and their talented in-house artists, Games Workshop not only agreed to Grenier’s request to create a traditional painting but also allowed him to keep and sell the original artwork. This decision mirrors the established practices seen in the Magic the Gathering artist community. The painting, which was originally set to be auctioned through renowned fantasy art broker Mark Aronowitz, was instead sold privately for a significant sum mere hours after the auction was announced.
White Dwarf 500 Artwork 3500 is a huge edition, and Games Workshop commissioning a real painting of Grombrindal is a great move! The cover looks amazing, as does the artwork. Unfortunately, the piece has supposedly already sold for an undisclosed “significant amount.”
This makes us think if you don’t even go to auction and just take an offer, it has to be about as close to as much as you can expect to get at auction. We couldn’t verify that it is already sold, but if it was announced for auction and is no longer on the bill, we expect it to be already sold.
It’s interesting to see such iconic Games Workshop art sell so quickly, but if you want to see more of Johan’s work, we have that for you below!

Johan Grenier’s Artstation

White Dwarf 500 Artwork 2

Johan has worked on some super iconic pieces of art for games like Diablo IV, Boltgun, tons of Magic cards, and so much more! He also has a bunch of cool WIPs that you can check out on his Artstation too.

The majority of his art there is for major games, so you might have a hard time buying them, but they are awesome to look at.

However, this isn’t the only Games Workshop artwork we’ve seen in the wild, but this next piece might not be for sale unless you’re Henry Cavill.

Original Eldar Avatar Artwork Isn’t for Sale Unless You are Henry Cavill

After last week’s Avatar post I’ve received a number of inquiries as to the availability of the original art so I thought I’d pop on to say, he’s not for sale.
That being said… if Henry Cavill starts playing Eldar and is prepared to toss a truly vulgar amount of Witcher coin into my Valley of Plenty, I might reconsider!

It would be awesome if Mr. Cavill popped up and bought this artwork. It’s quite stunning, and the new Eldar Avatar is clearly based on it!

Considering he obviously keeps an eye on what’s happening in the Warhammer space, it’s totally possible that he gets wind of the offer. We’re not sure how much it would cost or if he would be interested, but we’d love to see if he ponders it. There’s also the mention that he would have to start playing Eldar, but why shouldn’t he?

Again, it’s interesting to see GW leave their in-house department, and maybe this is the way of the future for them.
