From Hype to Heartbreak: GW’s Big 40k Box Set Release is Tanking

warhammer space marine 40k age of sigmar wal horFor the first time in a while, Games Workshop’s latest release, and the big Warhammer 40k box set for April, doesn’t seem to be selling well.

Games Workshop has been releasing new sets and expansions weekly to keep thier games fresh and exciting. However, the latest big Warhammer 40k release for April seems to be facing challenges in terms of sales.

GW’s Big Warhammer 40k Box Set For April Isn’t Selling Now

Who has this one on their GW bingo card? The Kroot Hunting Pack, the latest big release for April, seems to be facing challenges in terms of sales.  This unexpected situation has raised several questions in the community. So, we’ll look at the reasons behind the slow sales and what it could mean for retailers and consumers alike.

Retailers in North America received an email from Games Workshop ealier in the week offering them the opportunity to purchase more Kroot Hunting Packs. But there may be one little issue…

“Due to unprecedented demand, we are providing a one-time opportunity to request an increase for the Kroot Army Box.”

While the retailers we spoke with applauded the opportunity to purchase more product, many were confused by the wording of this offer. Demand is a fickle thing, and if there is too much, usually the supply has dried up.

It did sell out in the US. However, it’s the US and supposedly Games Workshop’s biggest market, so mostly everyone we spoke with expected that. However, if the #2 and #3 sales regions don’t sell out, that could be an issue for the Games Workshop, which has said its goal is to “sell out each release.”

What Does it Really Mean?

While they phrase it as a one-time opportunity, retailers seem to all agree that simply means GW has boxes left in stock somewhere and wants stores to buy the excess. This is really the first time in a while we haven’t seen a release totally sold out, and who knows, maybe you will be able to score some deep discounts in a few months once the secondary retailers get a hold of bigger stock.

How Games Workshop Could Have Done Better

While retailers applaud the opportunity to purchase more stock, they seem confused by the message, and most we spoke with were happy with the orders they initially placed.

Sure, any salesman is going to try anything they can to sell their product. However, the wording on GW’s offer may have gone over better with store owners if they had approached it this way:

We appreciate your patience and loyalty, and we are committed to providing you with the best possible service.

We understand that many of our customers have been eagerly waiting for an opportunity to increase their Kroot Army Box forecast numbers. Therefore we are happy to announce that we are offering a one-time chance to fulfill your request…

Retailers all have a slew of problems each day without getting a pushy email from GW sent to them on top of everything else. Perhaps this version would have resulted in a more favorable outcome for both parties involved?

Final Thoughts:

The Kroot Hunting Pack seems like a really cool box with all kinds of new miniatures and even a brand-new way to play Tau. However, the box doesn’t seem to be selling as well as GW had hoped. It’s also the first time we can remember in a long time where GW had extra stock, above and beyond the original caps they put on retailers.

It’s interesting to see the Kroot Hunting Pack not selling out in all regions. While it may just be a sign of a niche army subset, it could also indicate that hobbyists are not as interested in GW’s releases heading into spring as well.
