GW’s Best & Worst Warhammer 40k Armies For October 6th

new-competivie-meta-warhammer-40k-10th-EditionHere are GW’s best and worst Warhammer 40k armies that are doing the best at the latest 10th Edition tournaments or down in the dumps…

Thanks to Mr. Taste at Blood of Kittens, here’s a look at the latest placings and meta from the larger 10th Edition 40k tournaments last weekend!

GW’s Best & Worst Warhammer 40k Armies: October 6th

Best and Worst Armies

The September 40k balance data slate is still settling in, meaning the current meta is still smoothing out the corners as people learn what’s what. From the looks of it, Chaos in all forms is moving up!

This is what Mr. Taste had to say:

We are seeing a good mix of factions performing well, but we might still need some more point increases for Aeldari, as they are just a hair above the competition. We shall see if the new Space Marine codex will change the meta again, but from the looks of the previews, we will see lots of flexibility, but it seems the army might not pack enough lethality.

Last week, we saw 21 factions take the top spots, but this week, that number went down to 14, which is still pretty good considering how things looked at the beginning.

But how about the larger meta picture overall?  Well, Eldar certainly has more competition at tournaments running the balance changes now, which makes us hopeful that the competitive scene will continue to get better!

Warhammer 40k Meta Overview from October 3rd 2023:

Statcheck.com also has us covered on the overall Warhammer 40k faction win rates and meta, compiling the data up to October 3rd, 2023, for just Balance Dataslate play.

Best and Worst Armies 3Comparing the newly updated rankings to the previous ones below, there have been more changes as the meta continues settling post-dataslate. However… just a week after Aeldari fell, they are back on top, so do with that what you will, but they are still top dogs even after multiple NERFS.

Leagues of Votann and Tau are the two biggest benefactors of the Dataslate, as they both went from abysmal win rates to 55-56%!

Then CSM has also jumped up and won some big events over the weekend. Apparently it’s an excellent time to be a traitor in 40k! Unfortunately, Drukhari have fallen to the bottom (but did have a lot of 4-0 starts), and the other NERFS seem to have had the intended purpose, as both Custodes and Knights have fallen to a 45% win rate.

Either way, there are still a couple of outliers, but most armies are resting in that 45%-55% zone where GW tries to keep the armies.

With that in mind, you can check out six of the top army lists from events over the weekend below.

Here is a look back at last week’s overall standings from the second full week of post-balance dataslate play.

How to Read This Warhammer 40k Meta Overview Chart:

The Warhammer 40k Meta Overview Chart is color-coded for the most part. Grey is the sweet spot; ideally, every faction would be light grey or between a 45% and 55% win rate.

Blue is overpowered, and in contrast, Oranges are underpowered. Essentially, the darker shades are too far gone and need changes or shifts in the Meta. That’s not to say every darker blue and orange faction needs balance changes, but it DOES mean something needs to be done.

Game balance and meta are super complex, with each faction (and general’s ability) being its own cogs in the bigger picture.

Simply put, the most played faction in any competitive game should never be the most winning faction. As the popularity of a faction goes up, the skill, specified knowledge, and experience of the average player in that faction go down (new players moving to it).
