Warhammer Stores collectible coin promotion might be quite a telling sign to show just how far behind Games Workshop really is on their release schedule.
Obviously, COVID pushed everything back, however, just how far behind schedule is Games Workshop in the scheme of things? Their Collectable Coins are probably the best way to see, as they have become quite desynced with what is actually being released each month.
This is just something interesting to look at, as it’s fun to see what we should have already seen. Let’s start off when the releases started to desync, then get into now, where it’s quite off.
Collectible Coins are a Sign of How Far Behind Games Workshop Is
It all started with the Ork coin being spotted in the wild months before the release. We were wondering at the time if this was a sign they were just that far behind, or if they just got leaked. However, looking at the new releases of coins, it’s looking more like they were just that behind already in early 2021.
The second issue popped up back in December when they had this coin and free mini. We assume they were supposed to come out when Shadow Throne did, but they came out a full month before the release. Meaning to get the coin you had to spend money on stuff that was not new. At least GW gave us a heads up on this one as to when we could expect Shadow Throne.
There’s also a chance GW meant this to be for something different entirely as the coin isn’t necessarily Custodes specific.
Things seemed to get back on track a little with Tau, as they were only grabbing one new mini anyways. But since then, things got much more desynced.
Next came the Orruk Warclans coin, and they said it was for the exclusive mini, but this just felt like a very strange release as the battletome was released way before. So it’s possible they were falling behind from before, so had to change the coin when they came out and just threw this in to hold over for a month to get them closer to real-time releases.
Now, in March of 2022, things are getting even more strange, but at least with this one, they also gave us some reasoning for the coin.
It’s Getting Worse
This month (March) is when things got really wonky. All we’ve seen so far for Ash Wastes are some small teasers and artwork, so they couldn’t give a mini for Necromunda that would make sense. Since something for Deepkin came out, they just sort of threw that mini in, and it’s the third time we’ve seen a different mini than the coin.
There are a few things here that point to them being behind. First, Deepkin had rumors of being later in the year, meaning they could have just thrown the box at us early to fill the gap, and this would make sense with the timing of the battletomes compared to the box release.
Then, if Ash Wastes was supposed to be on the way this month, we can actually time how far behind the releases are. This time as well, they didn’t even try to explain the coin, they just said wear a Necromunda t-shirt to the store.
So, keep your eyes peeled for the actual Ash Wastes, and compare it to March, then we may know just how many months Games Workshop is behind on their schedule. Who knows, it might just be one month, but could easily end up being two or three at this point.
