Thanks to Best Coast Pairings we are able to look back at the event as if we were there ourselves.

6th Place: Travis Hill- Custodes

adeptus custodes new 8th edition warhammer 40k wal hor

soa 6 custodes 1Travis went with the Shadowkeepers Shieldhost, which based on the past top-placings, seems to be the most competitive choice for Custodes.

They also went for a single detachment, lead by a Shield captain on foot, plus one on a Dawneagle Jetbike. Both extremely durable, but they also give you rerolls of 1 to nearby troops- not just core (for now). The Jetbike gets access to some high damage rounds and a huge boost to mobility.

soa 6 custodes 2Troops bring two squads of thee Sagittarum Custodians that have decent melee and shooting, giving a flexible unit, and a melee-focused Guard squad with shields.

Elites bring two Achillus Dreadnoughts, both with double Adrathis Destructors. These are great because they are assault meaning the Dreadnoughts and can roam around the field freely without penalty, constantly being in the best positions.

There is also a Vexilus Praetor which gives nearby units -1 to hit in shooting, giving the list significantly more hardiness. Now it looks like with the recent FAQ update vexilas cost 0 points so this guy would be down to 90 points!

soa 6 custodes 3For Fast Attacks, there is a single squad of 5 Venatari Custodians, which have jump packs, giving the list some extra mobility for capping objectives and taking out easy, lone targets. They also have the option of setting up in reserves too which is nice flexibility for their points.

Finishing out the detachment is 2 Telemon Heavy Dreadnoughts with Accelerator Culverins for long-range anti-armor support to help high priority target while being able to move around and protect themselves with their Caestus.

5th Place: Philipp Kovac- Harlequins

soa 5 harlequin 1

The Harlequins list by Philipp is a single detachment led by a Troupe Master and a Shadowseer. Shadowseers help protect your troops by making the enemy reduce wounds rolls by one, while the troupe master allows you to reroll wound rolls in the fight phase.

soa 5 harlequin 2

soa 5 harlequin 3Five 5 man Troupe squads are pretty standard choices for Troops, especially when you realize Harlequins only have one troop choice. It also means there are 25 bodies to man vehicles and grab objectives all while benefiting from the HQ auras.

The Death Jester is a great cheap option that can deal some damage to characters and lets you abuse units that flee.

soa 5 harlequin 4For Fast Attacks, there are a total of 14 Skyweavers. These are very efficient fliers that are hard to hit and relatively reliable to deal damage with a bs 3+, not to mention how mobile they are, giving you great board presence and pressure.

soa 5 harlequin 5Finishing out the list are 5 Starweavers to help transport the 5 squads of Troupes. These are open-topped platforms, but even better, are only 80 pts apiece. They essentially give the troupes 6 extra wounds and 22″ movement. It’s not hard to see why these are a staple of Harlequins lists.

4th Place: Ryan Snyder- Custodes

Adeptus Custodes Wal Hor

soa 4 custodes 1The first Patrol is led by a Shield captain on foot, which is extremely durable and also give you rerolls of 1 to nearby troops- not just core (for now).

For Troops he brought 3 Sagittarum Custodians that have decent melee but even better shooting, giving you a flexible option in-game.

In Fast Attacks, there are 5 Vertus Praetor Jet bikes. These are some of the main damage dealers as the bikes are extremely good. Not to mention the extra layer of durability and mobility all wrapped in one nice package.

Just like the other list, Ryan brought two Achillus Dreadnoughts, both with double Adrathis Destructors. These are great because they are assault meaning the Dreadnoughts and can roam around the field freely without penalty, constantly being in the best positions.

soa 4 custodes 2The second Patrol is led by a Shield captain on a Dawneagle Jetbike, giving more rerolls and gets access to some high damage rounds and a huge boost to mobility.

A single squad of Prosecutors offers cheap bodies that can grab objectives while your list tries to widdle down the opponent’s forces, and dip into the anti psker pool.

A Culexus Assassin brings some extra anti-psyker support, since this list (and faction) doesn’t really have any other way to deny psykers effectively.

Two Pallas Grav-attacks bring a super-efficient armored unit with great shooting, while the Caladius Grav-tank is a suped-up version that’s a bit more expensive with better weapons and more wounds.

What do you think about these 40k army lists from the Siege of Augusta GT Tournament? Are Custodes shaping up to be a top army in 9th? How about other factions?
