Thanks to Mr. Taste at Blood of Kittens, here’s a look at the latest placings and meta from the larger 10th Edition 40k tournaments last weekend!

Best & Worst Warhammer 40k Armies Through November 1st

The latest 40k balance dataslate might still be settling in, but to all of our dismay, Eldar is still at the top. However, tied with them, Chaos Space Marines and a few others are fighting back!

This is what Mr. Taste had to say:

Not much to report outside of Aeldari dominating, but we can say that World Eaters have secured a top 3 podium finish for the third week in a row. It also appears that Space Marine players are experimenting with sub-factions from various chapters to discover the most effective combinations. It will be interesting to see whether the ability to use the Codex Space Marine detachments will be permitted when the first supplements are released for the different chapters.

Last week, we saw 16 factions take the top spots, but this week, that number went to 12, which is still pretty good considering how things looked at the beginning.

The biggest winner must be CSM, as people continue to test new combinations, but Astra Militarum actually beat them out with two finishes to get 2nd place this week.

But how about the larger meta picture overall?  Well, Eldar certainly has more competition at tournaments after the balance dataslate, which makes us hopeful that the competitive scene will continue to get better, and they finally aren’t on top from the weekend…

How to Read This Warhammer 40k Meta Overview Chart:

The Warhammer 40k Meta Overview Chart is color-coded for the most part. Grey is the sweet spot; ideally, every faction would be light grey or between a 45% and 55% win rate.

Blue is overpowered, and in contrast, Oranges are underpowered. Essentially, the darker shades are too far gone and need changes or shifts in the Meta. That’s not to say every darker blue and orange faction needs balance changes, but it DOES mean something needs to be done.

Game balance and meta are super complex, with each faction (and general’s ability) being its own cogs in the bigger picture.

Simply put, the most played faction in any competitive game should never be the most winning faction. As the popularity of a faction goes up, the skill, specified knowledge, and experience of the average player in that faction go down (new players moving to it).

What’s New With Competitive Warhammer 40k This Week?

Chaos Space Marine Codex Wal Hor

Leagues of Votann and Tau might be the two biggest benefactors of the Dataslate, as they both went from abysmal win rates to 55-56% (Tau has fallen to 47% this week)! But this week, CSM easily takes the cake!

CSM is the second-most winning faction, but it just didn’t beat out Eldar data this week! But with Stat Check, we see that they had more event wins! Either way, it is an excellent time to play Chaos and Xenos in 40k.

Well, unless you play Drukhari, as they have fallen to the bottom, and the other NERFs seem to have had the intended purpose, as both Custodes and Knights have fallen to a 44% win rate (which GW mentions in their Oct 19th Metawatch update.)

Either way, there are still a couple of outliers, but most armies are resting in that 45%-55% zone where GW tries to keep the armies.
