Hornet Medium Walker

Warlord Games has launched reinforcements for the British Army in Konflict ’47. Come check out the Hornet Medium Walker and the Automated Carrier!

Konflikt ’47 is a standalone game inspired by the hugely successful Bolt Action. Imagine if World War II continued beyond 1945 with armored walkers, bizarre new technologies and twisted abominations and you have an idea of what Konflict ’47 has to offer. Warlord Games’ latest releases for Konflict ’47 are for the British Army and consist of the Hornet Medium Walker and the Automated Carrier. The Hornet is designed for infantry support in close, urban terrain. The Automated Carrier has two automated infantry units hardwired into a vehicle armed with a twin auto-cannon weapon system. Both kits are made with resin and meta and are 28mm – 1/56th in scale.

As British research and development continue in the embryonic fields of automation and automotive intelligence, the combination of automated control units and armoured vehicles is a logical progression. With no requirement for crew comfort and with a greater tolerance to shock, noise and impact, an automated vehicle offers the opportunity to place larger weapon systems on relatively small, agile and hard to hit platforms.

The initial trials proved largely successful, with the combat potential of these vehicles deemed worth the occasional processing glitches and failures. With trials completed, the deployment of large numbers of automated carriers is the first large-scale field test of this concept.

Using the ubiquitous universal carrier as a base, two automated infantry units are hardwired into the vehicle, one as a driver and the other as a gunner. With any redundant limbs or body parts removed, the AI units take little space which allows a mounting of a twin auto-cannon weapon system. This firepower would be unworkable with a human crew due to the recoil, noise levels and cramped crew space, but works with automated crew perfectly.

As the effectiveness and versatility of the US medium walkers was proven repeatedly in combat, the British Army requested larger numbers through the Allied Lend-Lease arrangement. Deliveries of Grizzly and subsequently Mudskipper medium walkers were welcomed, but the British General Staff procurement officers were hesitant about the more specialised Kodiak and Bruin variants.

Instead, the British developed the Hornet based on the reliable Grizzly chassis. The Hornet has a reduced anti-aircraft capability due to its more restricted field of fire, but it is primarily designed to support infantry in close, urban terrain. By retaining the Grizzly’s powerful utility arms it can clear obstacles, build improvised defences and rip apart light vehicles, all of which allow it to maintain its momentum in close or urban terrain.

Armed with a fearsome array of four .50 cal HMGs and a short-barrelled, heavy automatic cannon, it is more than capable of suppressing dug-in infantry and vehicles at close range. Trials with a longer barrelled automatic cannon produced mixed results as the increased weapon range was tempered by manoeuvrability problems at close range and in tight urban spaces. Whilst the Hornet lacks genuine anti-tank capability beyond the reach of heavy duty fists, a platoon of Hornets would normally include a standard Grizzly as a ‘gun-walker’ to provide some anti-tank protection.
