Quick, Easy, Awesome, Painting NMM Non-Metallic Weapons

squidmar painting weaponsOnce again, Squidmar is bringing us a tutorial on painting! This time, he’s giving us his three separate levels and the steps to paint weapons.

Squidmar makes his return once again this time bringing in his method to metals! Most people will use metallic paints, however, to really encapsulate his art, he goes a non-metal route! This helps imitate a photo instead of a normal object in real space. Let’s see just how he accomplishes this! He also gives us three different tiers or quality of work to go for.

For the flat side of the blade, we will be using: Rhinox Hide, Troll Slayer Orange, and Mournfang Brown. The bright side will be made up of Ogryn Camo, Slannesh Grey, and Underbelly Green from P3.

For the flat side, we will want to paint the blade using the darkest colors first moving closer to the edge with each color change. Make sure you stipple the colors on while the paint is still wet so that it can sort of blend on its own. It will look bad at first but we will patch it up later.

blade step 1

While that dries we can start the blade. We will get it going with some imitation highlights of Underbelly Green from P3, you can also add some optional wet blending if you wish but it isn’t necessary.

After that, we can trace along the edge of the blade, and down the center with a mix of 50-50 white and Underbelly Green. Once again, wet blending towards the center if we wish. During this step, we can also return to the flat side of the blade to recover the rust again and add a flat black line along the edge closest to the blade.

Squidmar Reflection

Take some Temple Guard Blue and Vallejo Gold paint. Use these both as glazes to imitate color reflections of the environment. His model is in a sandy biome, so the gold is the sand reflection and the blue is the sky. You can also edge highlight the backside of the sword with the white-green mix to make it pop even more.
