The Sky is Falling For 40k Ork Players…

orks-wal-title-horOkay not really, but… Ork players are up in arms over the new Boyz kit for all sorts of reasons. Here’s the latest.

Some players have been really upset after seeing the unboxing of the new Ork Combat Patrol. We think the models being push-fit is nice, and to us, the new sculpts are pretty cool, but there is one big drawback as there aren’t 10 of each weapon.  Meaning you can’t build a full squad of either Sluggas or Shootas from just one of the new boyz kits

Does it suck the new sprues in the Combat Patrol don’t even have 5 of each weapon? Yep 100%, but let’s take a step back and look at the bigger picture for a sec.

The Sky isn’t Falling on Ork Players With the New Boyz

Orks Pushfit (1)So here is what you get with the new Boyz kit that did end up being Easy To Build, and is currently paywall locked to the Ork Combat Patrol (you can read more about that here).

You get 5 Slugga/Choppas, 3 Shootas, 1 Nob, and 1 Rokkit Launcha/Big Shoota per 10 Boyz.  So in theory you can never even make a squad of 30 boyz from three kits as you will always have an “extra” nob as well.

While at first, it does look a little strange honestly because why would they not give you both options and just a mixture of each?

To be fair it’s our understanding that the whole point of the Combat Patrols (previously Start Collecting Boxes) are to give new players an easy way to build a small amount of a force and get them on the table.

They aren’t really aimed at veteran players. So with that in mind, these are push-fit, look great and go together in minutes. For a new player that sounds awesome. Plus, if you’re playing a friendly game, 9 out of 10 opponents won’t care as long as you tell them what weapons they have.

Will The Real Boyz Please Stand Up

old ork boys box updated to 9th editionIf you’re playing tournaments and such, that’s really the only time this becomes a big issue. Again, is it super annoying? Yes. But GW still has the other Boyz box available that has all ten weapon options. Plus they recently updated the box art for 9th Edition- meaning it’s probably going to be stocked at stores for a while longer.

So if you’re going to a tournament, then just grab the old boyz and perhaps mix in the sculpts for more variety in the army. With the number of new units, it’s still a great release overall and if this is the worst of it, it’s better than the majority of 40k armies receive in a release (think about the Sisters of Battle Combat patrol box that featured weird numbers of models for squads).

Overall we hope the sky isn’t falling for Ork players, as there are other options for them at least this time from Games Workshop- it’s just may not be super optimal for veteran players wanting “all-new minis”.

Do you like the updated Boyz? Are you upset they don’t come with all the weapon options?
