Another off-meta Warhammer 9th Edition 40k army list emerged in the Goonhammer Open US GT, check this one out!
9th Edition’s meta is again in flux, but some players are taking lists with units that nobody was expecting. Check out this awesome homebrew list that emerged in a tournament over the weekend. They didn’t do too bad and just goes to show that sometimes it’s more about the general’s skill than what you play.
Top Homebrew 40k Army List: Goonhammer Open US GT

Goonhammer Open US GT: TJ Lanigan – Nurgle
TJ’s Nurgle list was comprised of two detachments. The first is a Daemon-only Battalion led by Epidemius and a Great Unclean One. Epidemius is relatively cheap and buffs nearby daemons, while the Great Unclean One, is a beast who is very hard to kill and gives you a tiny bit of Psychic support.
9 Nurglings are there to benefit from Epidemius and hold objectives thanks to the wounds count and daemon saves. A single unit of 9 Beasts of Nurgle are the only Elite and can lay down a ton of damage, however, they do have a large amount of variance thanks to their d6 attacks.
Finishing the first detachment are 8 Plague Drones. These provide some very mobile units and in many cases are the most mobile unit in a Nurgle-based list. Because of Nurgle’s natural low movement, they are very valuable in most lists when they are taken.
The second detachment is a small Death Guard force led by a Malignant Plaguecaster for psychic support. There is also a Tallyman in this section for command point generation. Finally, the reason TJ wanted Death Guard in his list, is the triple Plagueburst Crawlers. These are absolute units on the tabletop. They have fantastic weapons, great stat-lines, and on top of it, all are very-very cost-efficient. Almost every Death Guard list runs these and a lot take the max of 3!
Overall this list offers an older approach, but we like it because of their all-in on an aspect of their faction in a response to the meta.
Even better they got decent results (finishing top 5) from the player who piloted it! It’s also very encouraging when a player is able to play a previously widely considered “underpowered” army or list style so effectively.
But to be fair TJ tends to do well with this list when he’s not embroiled in controversy.
