40k Apocalypse- Ork Mega Deff Kopta Gunship

The first Mega Deff Kopta was built for Warboss Ribkracker by Big Mek Gigawright. Besides showing an affinity for both warbikes and flyers, Gigawright spent hours and hours tinkering for new ways to get da boyz into the battle the fastest.

After battling Air Assault Imperial Guard (da ones who jump out da jet fightas) in the Tendias Forgeworld, Gigawright had an idea. His new kustom conversion would be just like da ‘umies one, but faster and ’mo Orky den all the rest. His creation would bridge the gap between Trukk and Fighta, and allow da bosses’ boyz to get to the fighting anytime anywhere!  Har, Har, Har!!

When the Lootas captured one of the ‘umie flyers almost intact he had his chance Mork (or possibly Gork) had smiled on him.

Gigamek added the biggest choppa prop he could find and overcharged the engines almost to the point where they would shut off if used for an extended peroid of time.  They could, however be vectored to hover for short bursts to allow da boyz time to disembark and engage the enemy. He even added remote sensors and controls so he could fly one from the mek workshop if he wanted!

Boyz flocked to Ribkracker’s Waaaagh just to assault out of one of his new Koptas, and be the first lad to get stuck in!  Production camps were set up around the warzone to make more copies of his konversion. Even an elite team of grot pilots with “the right stuff” were trained to fly the Koptas from thier cramped cockpits, as no flyboy in his right mind wanted to be stuck shuttling around other boyz!

I had been meaning to get around to making up some rules for this thing for awhile. So finally here is the Apocalypse data sheet for it. It’s kinda pointed in between a Stormraven and Vendetta, and it’s a ton of fun.  You can download the PDF of it here.

So here’s a quick rundown of how I make the Original Deff Koptas for my Looted Imperial Guard Army. I used them counts as for Vendettas and had a blast with them.

I started out with the normal kit, and supplemented it a bit.  I had a few pieces left over from some Valkyrie jet conversions I did awhile back, and I splashed a few extra bits from those kits in here.

The wings are actually the rear tail stabilizer cut in half, with magnets for the weapon mounts.Once that was done I noticed the body was a little unstable sitting on the ground so I added an extra landing skid from the removed wings.

As you can see the rear vertical stabilizers have been removed for the prop to have clearance to spin.  A lot of people comment on the lack of a rear prop, but the Orks don’t care it all flies the same for them.

The propeller itself is from a fake GI Joe toy I got from Wal-Mart for $10 (something “The Corps”).  Pretty good price for just the right bit I needed if you ask me. The propellers actually fold up into a smaller “x” for storage as well.

The overall details were just a good splash of plastic card triangles and glyphs all over to make it proper Orky. I also used a leather punch to make rivets in the plates so they blended in with the overall theme.

When I was working on my list I wasn’t sure if I was going to go with Vendetta or Valkyrie, so lol I decided to do both, and magnetized up all the weapon options. Last but certainly not least was the Gretchin pilots. I just used some spare heads from the Stompa and Grot boxes to give them that Top Gun look.

So that’s it. What do you think of this new Apocalypse unit? -MBG
