Rumors, Can The Hobby Live Without Them?

Hey guys, I’m going to spend some time ranting and raving like a lunatic. Why? Because it’s fun. I hope you enjoy it too. Speculating, talking, commenting, being social is a thing us humans like to do.

Some people like to read things like the National Enquirer while others would rather take a quiz about which Primarch they are. We all enjoy wasting our time doing silly things. Rumors, are in that same vein.

“Why do you even visit that site, they literally make stuff up,” Rob asked me one day as he peeked over my shoulder.

“Because it’s fun, sure most of it is whatever, but every once in awhile some of it comes true. It’s fun to imagine and hope. Stop trying to take away my dreams!”

Editor’s note: Rob Baer – Dreamcrusher. You heard it here first (and he has a stupid face).sisters_of_battle_color_study_by_skinpeel-d4qpbam

The ongoing myth that Plastic Sisters have been done and are on ice has kept my dreams alive for years. That rumor has got to be like 10 years old now. Every year it comes up and every year nothing happens.

It’s a rumor that’s basically an urban legend. It’s fun and I sincerely hope GW saw the interest and invested in making us some plastic sisters.

So, what brought this whole rant up? Well, this guy made a really cool piece of artwork, tried to sell it as a GW leak with, the intent to prove that rumor sites are rubbish.

Needless to say this artwork got tons of views and comments. But here’s the thing, he did the same thing tabloids and web aggregators did, he sold us a dream to get attention. I hope nothing but the best for this guy, it’s a neat marketing tactic and I hope he gets some jobs out of this.

However, at the end of the day I would have rather he just come out and said, “Listen, I’m sorry I tried to fool you all but if I had just released this as a piece of artwork it wouldn’t have gotten as many views.” That would have proven a much better point, we should be giving our fellow hobbyists as much attention when they do great work as we do people who make stuff up.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, one of my favorite things to do is look at Warhammer Art because it inspires me to try and paint my models, but had this guy just posted this on his blog it would have been years before I saw it. That’s just how the internet works.

If you, and by you I mean the community as a whole, are really not happy with the content on our hobby websites I implore you to click on things that are hobby centric and then share the *$&# out of them them on your Facebook feeds. The more these types of articles get attention the more we’ll make. It’s easy math.

The bottom line is this, we all enjoy the hobby in our own way, hobby websites is one of those ways I enjoy it and if you’re reading this you’re probably a like-minded individual. Some people like to visit these sites and troll people with opinions.

That’s cool too if it makes you happy, my skin is thick, thicker than a bowl of oatmeal. But don’t sit on your high horse and say you wanted to prove something because honestly, I think the only thing you’re doing is trying to get attention; and that’s totally fine, just be honest about it, I’ll respect you more.
