Even More 8th Edition Teasers From GW’s Live Q&A!

hor of space marine and chaos

Warhammer TV had a live Q&A session on Facebook. Come find out even more of what Games Workshop had to say about the upcoming 8th Edition.

There was definitely not a shortage of questions for Games Workshop during this live Q&A with Pete Foley & Andy Smilie. Let’s take a look at some more of the key points from the stream:

  • Everyone is getting new rules day one of launch. It’s going to be a low price point compared to codex books, and all rules will be included in this new rules book.
  • Q: Will expansions still be part of the game? I.E. Cities of Death. A: Yes the narrative supplements will still be included in the game.
  • Warhammer plans on using a General’s Handbook style rule book, updated yearly, and taking community feedback to help make the game better and evolve for the better.
  • Q: How will free rules be available? A: Digital download and limited printed supplies available at GW stores and local game stores.
  • Q: Will there be an army builder app like AoS? A: Yes, not on launch, but it will be coming.
  • Tournament play does not have a specific rule set, but there are guidelines to help organize a tournament, and they will be working to make tournament play easier to run for the organizers.
  • Everything is now balanced. There is not going to be any overly strong units, or overly weak units.
  • The top 3 goals for the design team for this edition were to make a game that worked for all 3 play types, focus on the background of the 40k Galaxy, and make it more accessible for all parts of the hobby.
  • Q: When is the new edition being released? A: This year, more news coming very soon, just not today.

  • There will be multiple sets of army points upon the launch of 8th edition. Power level, focused on narrative. You’ll pay power level points for each unit, equipped weapons do not matter. Match play will be paying points for models and weapons. Both point systems will be released day one.
  • There are new things on the way, including factions, and some coming out with the launch.
  • Monsters will decrease in stats and damage output just like vehicles.
  • Stats will not be capped at 10 in the new edition. But everything can damage everything else, a bolter can damage a tank, but it may not be noticeable right away in the damage chart.
  • Allied forces are still viable but will work a little different, it’s going to be a keyword driven system. Abilities won’t be passed to anyone that doesn’t carry the required keywords. Death Stars usually come about from exploiting the rules and loopholes, the keywords will make it so you can’t take advantage of units that shouldn’t be grouped together.
  • Q: What are command points? A: In Matched and Narrative games, all armies must be battle-forged. There are now 14 Force Organizationcharts. If you fulfill a particular chart, you get command points, depending on size of that chart. These can be used for rerolls, interrupt charges which let’s you pick a fight, not just chargers. Can use one per turn, with no way to get them back.  Generic command points at first, faction specific ones later.

It’s obvious Games Workshop is really looking out for the hobby as a whole and trying to grow the game we all love. This Q&A shed some light on their thoughts behind making the changes they did to the game, and what we can expect to see in the future.

There was a lot of great information put out during this Q&A. Be sure to check back in with us for the latest update everyday leading up to the release.
