Locus that Broke Us: How Daemons Made Marines OP?

By Jack Stover | December 29th, 2017 | Categories: Death Guard, Editorials, jstove, Warhammer 40k

Mortarion Death GuardToday were taking a look at how the new Daemon codex teaser can affect everyone’s favorite renegades, Mortarion and the Death Guard!

Jstove here, hot on the heels of the new spoilers for the Daemon codex to talk about the fastest, nastiest, blastiest demonic hot rods in the galaxy…

And it’s not Slaanesh, it’s Nurgle! Wow, how’d that happen?

Nurgle green meme

If you haven’t been paying attention to Chaos lists lately, Speed Nurgle is pretty popular. What is Speed Nurgle? It’s Fast Guard, Bloat spam, whatever you want to call it… The reason for the season is the Foetid Bloat Drone. Why is the Bloat Drone so great? Because it’s 99 points, (before weapons) it’s cheap as hell to get when you break it out of starter boxes, it’s got great Toughness and Armor, and it’s Disgustingly Resilient. It moves 10″, and with its best equipment loadout (the dual bug sprayers) it’s putting out 2D6 S6 (at full wounds) shots that can’t miss, and re-roll 1’s To Wound. Mortarion isn’t famous for being one of the tech savvy handy primarchs like Perturabo or Ferrus, but when it comes to building hot rods he’s like John Travolta in Grease.

So what could possibly make Morty Travolta and the Greased Lightning rot rods even better?

The Locus that Broke Us:

Look at this ridiculous locus. First of all, it applies to all NURGLE DAEMONS, so it’s not just your Chaos Daemon army. Everyone in the Chaos soup that is down for Papa N gets in on this madness. Second, and to me, more importantly, look at how it is not even in the fight phase. It triggers on shooting too!

The Rot Rod Hot List

blight hauler

In case you don’t have your Death Guard codex in front of you, here’s the list of all the models in the codex that have NURGLE DAEMON keywords. (besides, you know, actual Daemons.)

  • Morty Himself
  • Possessed
  • Defiler
  • Plagueburst Crawler
  • Foetid Bloat Drone
  • Blight Hauler

So you can see, not only does this benefit the big man himself, but it also blows out the all star units in his codex, the hot new demon engines he’s been wrenching on in his garage. Chaos players all over the competitive scene have already adopted the bloat drone as a sturdy, reliable workhorse unit that can put damage on the field and points on the table. But now, imagine doubling his already reliable damage output, and all they have to do is stand next to an allied Nurgle Daemon with a Locus.

Editor’s note:  Most of these weapons have the Plague ability as well, so while we are not mathologists, re-rolling 1’s to wound makes a noticeable fraction of your wound rolls into a 6 much more easily. Also remember too the Veterans of the Long War stratagem that gives you +1 to your wounds [Death Guard]. Combo that with Daemon power Virulent Blessing that gives any [Nurgle Daemon] unit +1 to wound and gifts wound rolls of 7+ in the fight phase Double Damage.

Go Greased Lightning, Go!
