To start, once the model is primed black, Vallejo Flow Improver is mixed with P3 Bloodstone and sprayed all over the entire model. Bloodstone is a great brown base for the trenchcoat and building up reds on his skin.

Add Mephiston Red by Games Workshop to the Bloodstone, adding a reddish hue to the brown for the skin. Spray the model from the top down to keep more browns on the underside of the muscles and create shadows. Next, add Evil Sunz Scarlet by Games Workshop to the mix and spray the muscles and where highlights would naturally hit. Then, add in Troll Slayer Orange by Games Workshop and spray the model in small spurts. Be sure not to spray up to pure orange.

Bring back Bloodstone, thin it down to a glaze and brush it onto the coat. The glaze should be thin so you can build up the color slowly. Glazing the brown onto the model will help glaze out the overspray from the airbrushed reds. You’ll need to apply this glaze a few times, letting each coat dry completely. Pick your airbrush back up and spray Baneblade Brown by Games Workshop onto the model to highlight the coat, be careful to avoid the reds. Then, use Baneblade Brown to glaze lines and details on the coat for highlights.

Use Engine Grime by Secret Weapon Miniatures as the base for the black shorts, painting directly onto the shorts. Thin down some Heavy Metal by Scale 75 and paint over the revolver, the buckles, and other silver metals. Once dry, you can airbrush Gloss Varnish by Vallejo over the entire model to seal in the highlights and prepare for applying washes.

You can mix Red Tone and Dark Tone washes by the Army Painter with Quickshade Mixing Medium to create a dark red, thin wash. Brush that over the model. The gloss varnish will help prevent coffee staining on the model, but you still want to push the wash into the cracks and prevent pooling. Mix Flesh Wash and Mid Brown the same way and add them to the coat. Using the washes in this way helps to blend aggressive transitions and knock down paint that’s too bright. Also add Pure Dark Tone over the silvers and blacks. Once the wash is dry, you can pinwash select areas to bring out stronger shadows in different areas like the muscles.

Hellboy is now tabletop ready and geared to take down his enemies. For more information about Mantic’s Hellboy: The Board Game, check out their Kickstarter! For the entire process, press play on the video below!
