Mix Charred Brown by Vallejo Game Air with Vallejo Flow Improver in the airbrush and spray it over the model in thin coats for your base. Then mix Beaten Purple into the Charred Brown. Build this mixture up over the skin from the top down, creating a stronger color focus where the light would hit the most to create natural shadows with the base coat.
Add in Sunny Skin Tone from Vallejo to build up highlights from the top down once again. Bring out the details in the face as well by spraying to bring up the flat surfaces and enhance the natural shadows through contrast.
Use the purple again to lightly glaze back over parts of the previous mixture, creating more contrast in the shadows. This helps create transitions over muscles. Mix black with the purple to create a dark violet shadow and spray in the cracks and under the muscles. Be careful to spray this shade extremely thin to prevent overpowering the other work up.
This provides a great base to keep working up shadows and highlights by going back and forth through this process. By applying the paint in thin layers, the paint never builds up excessively and creates smoother transitions.
Using an airbrush, this workup is extremely easy and relatively quick. You can achieve similar effects with a paintbrush, but it will take longer and require glazing with extremely thin paints.
