Check out the points breakdowns for all the new bundle boxes that are coming from GW for Age of Sigmar this holiday season!
Grey skies, cold weather, and the dreaded blanket of white that lasts a long 5 months is upon us here in the great north.
Our neighbors across the pond, however, are offering (for a small fee) goodie boxes of plastic to help warm our homes and keep us busy through the long nights.
If you are interested in these armies, these bundles along with start collecting boxes are perfect ways to begin or flesh out your army at considerable savings. (Click here to see the money savings)
Let’s look at the point break down for each of these Age of Sigmar boxed sets though and see if they are a good addition to your force from a model standpoint.
Daughters of Khaine Devoted of Morathi:
- Khinerai (either Heartrenders or Lifetakers): 80 points (No unit type)
- Kninerai (either Heartrenders or Lifetakers): 80 points (No unit type)
- Melusai Blood Stalkers: 160 points (no unit type) OR Melusai Blood Sisters: 140 points (Battleline 1 of 3 if you use Bloodwrack Medusa as you General)
- Slaughter Queen with Cauldron of Blood: 330 points (Leader 1 of 6, Behemoth 1 of 4)
- Witch Aelves: 100 points (Battleline 2 of 3)
- Total 730 – 750 points
This is an interesting box giving you a cool centerpiece model with the Slaughter Queen on Cauldron of Blood. Giving you the Kninerai and the Melusai are nice touches as well, but you’re lacking in the battleline department.
In order to field this in a 1000-point match, you would need to buy a Bloodwrack Medusa and make her your general and then build the Melusai as Blood Sisters. But as a starter set, it is not bad especially since there is not a Daughter’s of Khaine start collecting box at this moment.
Overall though I just don’t think the point to cost value is there in the box, especially if you are planning on running lots and lots of witch aelves.
Idoneth Deepkin Deepsurge Raiding Party:
- Akhelian Allopex: 140 points (no unit type)
- Akhelian Allopex: 140 points (no unit type)
- Akhelian Morrsarr Guard: 160 points (Battleline 1 of 3 if using Akhelian General)
- Isharann Tidecaster: 100 points (Leader of 1 6)
- Namarti Thralls: 140 points (Battleline 2 of 3)
- Namarti Reravers: 140 points (Battleline 3 of 3 if using Isharann General)
- Total 820 points
This box set gives you all sorts of models to play with, as well as giving you everything you need to get going in 1000-point games. By making the Tidecaster your general you have your two battleline units to let you do whatever you want with the remaining 180 points. As a start collecting set for an army that does not have one this is a great grab.
However, it is light on leaders with only 1 so you are going to want to invest in a couple more leaders down the road. Also, note if you plan on building your army around Akhelian General (the eels) then you may want to pass on this box as it does not give you much to build around that list.
Seraphon Starclaw Strikehost:
- Bastiladon: 280 points (Behemoth 1 of 4)
- Ripperdactyl Riders: 140 points (no lunit type)
- Skinks: 60 points (Battleline 1 of 3)
- Skinks: 60 points (Battleline 2 of 3)
- Skink Starpriest: 80 points (Leader 1 of 6)
- Terradon Riders: 120 points (no unit type)
- Troglodon: 160 points (Behemoth 2 of 4)
- Total 900 points
A pretty good value box set here giving you everything you need to play in 1000 point games, without having to purchase much more. It is light on the leader, with the starpriest being an ok support character but hardly general material. Where it shines is the Bastiladon and the Riders giving you a hard hitter and some fast-moving dinosaurs.
If taken in chunks of 10, the skinks are not going to hold their ground for very long, but, it gives you a start to get a massive regiment of 40 of them. A great compliment to this box is the start collecting Seraphon box set. It was already released and gives you another behemoth and general worth Oldblood on Carnosaur.
Then, a unit of 5 saurus knights for some speed, and a unit of 10 saurus warriors that might be a little more of defensive objective hold unit. Overall, I think this box is a great value for a new player or one that wants to add onto their starter set.
Slaves to Darkness Godsword Warband:
- Chaos Chariot: 80 points (no unit type)
- Chaos Knights: 160 points (Slaves to Darkness Battleline 1 of 3)
- Chaos Knights: 160 points (Slaves to Darkness Battleline 2 of 3)
- Chaos Warriors: 90 points (Battleline 3 of 3)
- Chaos Warriors: 90 points (Battleline 4 of 3)
- Chaos Warriors: 90 points (Battleline 5 of 3)
- Chaos Warshrine: 160 points (Behemoth 1 of 4)
- Lord on Manticore: 250 points (Leader 1 of 6, Behemoth 2 of 4)
- Total 1080 points
I absolutely love this boxed set as a starter or add-on for Slave to Darkness players. It gives you two key units with the Chaos Warshrine and Lord on Manticore which are “must haves” in any Slaves to Darkness army. Along with that, you get a plethora of battleline troops with 10 knights (taken in units of 5) and 16 chaos warriors. (Taken in units of 5.)
You can easily fill your battle line requirement with this and combine some to make larger units. Two units of 5 knights and a unit of 15 warriors is a pretty solid core. The chariots are a decent speed troop that can hit hard but they are nothing amazing.
What is amazing is if you like this force and really want to go big with it all you need to do is add another great value set with the start collecting Slaves to Darkness which adds another 12 warriors, 5 knights, another chariot, and an excellent caster in the chaos sorcerer for 85 bucks. Now if they would only release a battletome for this army….
There you have it, my two favorite boxed sets for this is the Seraphon and Slaves to Darkness boxes with the Slaves to Darkness being the clear winner. Combine those with that factions start collecting box and you are close to 1500 points of models at considerable savings and have your battleline troops covered. For the Deepkin player; if you’re willing to run a mostly Isharann force, then this is one you could certainly build around.
But, if you want to take mostly eel cavalry, then you’re better off looking elsewhere. My least favorite is the Daughter of Khaine set which is a shame because there is no start collecting box for them and them very expensive in general.
I do not like that they give you a limited amount of battleline troops and while including witch aelves is great there is only 10. To get another 20 to max the unit our you are looking at 120 bucks.
