Don’t miss the top three armies that came out on top at the WinterCon meta! Check out the factions and what they brought to rise to the top!
Coming from an event called WinterCon, eighty total players showed up to roll dice in a 40k tournament. The competition had to be fierce with that many armies under one roof. Once the smoke settled on the event, only three lists managed to go undefeated.
Thanks to Best Coast Pairings, we can look back at the event as if we were there ourselves.
3rd Place: Chaos- Kieren Howard
Running off of 6 CP total (with the Tallyman maybe getting some back) this list is very different from the Battalion meta we’re in. After all, with two Supreme Command detachments getting filled, this list was mostly HQs.
Taking the basic frame from the hottest new Chaos list out there, this player took out the Ahriman/screen support and threw in the latest Slaanesh models to hit the shelves. With three Keepers of Secrets and a Contortred Epitome, there were a lot of big models on the field that could CRUSH in melee combat. For the tricky things like Flyers, two Foul Blightspawns were taken hoping to roll hot on their weapon stat. Great job on pioneering new units for the 40k meta!
2nd Place: Imperial Soup- Christopher Wright
Looking at the Imperial Guard’s latest meta-list, Cadians, Vostroyans, and Admech all linked arms to make this force. Pask led a Battalion with another tank commander and mortars in an Emperor’s Fist Vigilus formation. The next Battalion was Vostroyan and had two more Tank Commanders leading another Emperor’s Fist formation. However, this Battalion also had a Bullgryn beatdown squad with two Astropaths supporting them with psychic powers.
A small Spearhead of Admech was taken to also spam three of the new Skorpius Disintegrators as well. This is the first time we’ve seen them appear in an undefeated list. And with the player bringing three of them with the energy cannon, we know they’re a solid unit to take!
Finally, 2CP were spent for the Assassin Stratagem freeing the player to cherry-pick any Assassin he wanted to bring against his opponent. Great job showing us another unique list!
1st Place: Chaos Daemons: Matt Morosoli
This list took some of the best Daemons out there from just about every Chaos god. In essence, this army had Plaguebearers as stubborn screens, Horrors as fast, shooty Daemons, Tzangors as screen-clearers, and Bloodletters for the classic -3AP melee bomb. The real workhorse of the list came from Ahriman being the psychic machine gun and a few Daemon Princes from Tzeentch and Khorne.
The Tzeentch Daemon Princes are nice for their 4++ invuln while the Khorne Daemon Prince with an axe can topple a Knight by himself if he gets close enough. Finally, a few Cultists were also brought along for some backfield objective camping.
This list played on the classic Daemon package we’ve seen from the earlier days of 8th and spruced it up with some more personalized unit options. Great job coming in first with a unique list!
Overall, the winners of this tournament brought some highly customized lists. While they used some archetypal building blocks for the start of their army, they all brought some units in a combination that aren’t seen all too often these days.
