Want to spice up your games of Age of Sigmar? Check out some ideas for what the next big thing could be for the Mortal Realms!
We’ve seen a lot of focus on the Realm of Death since the start of AoS 2.0 Between the Necroquake and Forbidden Power, everything seems to have a death theme. That being said, how cool would it be to spice up the realms that we all fight in with realm-focused scenery?
Realm-Themed Scenery
Scenery is nothing new to AoS. In fact, it’s even more relevant in Age of Sigmar than in 40k. You can look on Games Workshop’s site now and see a whole slew of different terrain pieces. From the generic Dominion of Sigmar stuff to more faction-focused sets, there’s something for everyone. There’s even an in-game chart that players roll on to see what kind of “mystical powers” are enchanting the terrain.
With different realms offering rules and effects to the game, we feel like we could be more immersed in our game if we saw something our guys hiding behind terrain that might be found in the realm. For example, the realm of Hysh is the realm of light. It would make sense to see large brightly-colored stones and gems cluttered around the table.
Whereas the realm of Ghur, the realm of beasts, would be cluttered with beastly carcasses, thick jungle growth and blasted deserts, etc.
Obviously, these pieces of terrain could pass for a simple cosmetic option for the table. But we feel like this would also be a gold mine for new rules. For example, if an Orruk Warboss got close enough to a massive pile of bones, he could call on Gork and Mork and be blessed with their power.
Giving him something like three extra attacks. Or a Shaman on Ghur could summon something like a realm-exclusive endless spell of a boar that can run straight ahead and do D6+3 mortal wounds. We’re just scraping the tip of the iceberg here.
We’ve Seen it Done in Warhammer Underworlds
You might remember the Arcane Hazards terrain set for Warhammer Underworlds. We’re thinking it would be a neat idea for GW to release a handful of themed terrain in a small box for each mortal realm. Even if you choose not to play with the realms in AoS, they would make fantastic display board garnish.
What do you think about the idea of realm-themed terrain? What is your favorite realm to play on? Would you pick up a box of themed terrain if it hit the shelves? Let us know in the comments of our Facebook Hobby Group.
