GW Reveals New Chaos Tzeentch Battletome Rules

tzeentch tower hors walGW just revealed their preview of the new Disciples of Tzeentch rules that will be hitting the tabletop right at the start of 2020. Here’s the latest!

Warhammer Community, gave us a deeper look into the Disciples of Tzeentch. With the faction still being the psychic monsters that they’ve always been, GW has tweaked them to be even better.

Destiny Dice Still a Thing

Lord of change tzeentchBecause Tzeentch is the literal weaver of fates, playing as one of his followers will give you a key advantage on how you want your game to unfold. You’ve probably heard of “Destiny Dice” once before if you’re not a Tzeentch player. But if Tzeentch is your favorite army to play, the dice mechanic is still there. At the start of the game, you’ll roll 9 dice. If you need to convert a low roll into a higher roll (or vice versa), you’ll be able to use a Destiny Die with that value needed!

Tzeentch Has More Survivable Units

Daemons_of_Tzeentch-0 lore

tzeentch locus of changeDaemons still have their Loci, and for Tzeentch, any unit wholly within 12″ of a Tzeentch Daemon Hero is -1 to hit in melee. That means that precious casters and other Daemons have a higher chance of survival where they can cast their magic and retreat to let a blob of Tzaangors come in and ruin the opponent’s unit’s day.

New Hidden Agenda System For In-Game Bonuses

tzeentchThe followers of Tzeentch are always pursuing strange and inscrutable plots of their own – represented in-game by the new agenda system. Every hero phase, you can announce that you’re attempting to complete one of five agendas. If one of your Tzeentch units completes that agenda, they get a new ability as a reward.

tzeentch hidden agenda mass conjurationGW gave us an early look at one of the Hidden Agendas called Mass Conjuration. If you complete the Agenda, you unlock a new ability for the unit. You have to roll hot for two successful powers in a phase. But the reward is a +1 to casting for the rest of the game. You may need to use a few fate dice to complete this and we’re not sure if it’s worth eating up a high value on your fate dice pool… But we’ll have to see what other kinds of hidden agendas there will be.

Fate Points & Spending them Immediately

tzeentch fate pointsWhen you’re playing Tzeentch, every time a spell is cast and not unbound – including those used by your enemies! – you get a Fate Point. These can then be spent immediately on daemonic reinforcements, or accumulated over time to summon something bigger…

Having the fluidity of being able to plop a blob of Daemons in a spot you’re desperately trying to hold is definitely going to be an underrated superpower of the army. Especially considering all of the magic running around in the game right now.

Sub-Factions Previewed: Change Covens

tzeentch change coven eternal conflagrationRolling into the sub-factions of Tzeentch, Change Covens are groups that specialize in a particular aspect of Tzeentch’s sorcery. For the Eternal Conflagration, you’ll be able to take Flamers as Battleline as well as giving their weapon profiles an additional rend.

In this Change Coven, Flamers of Tzeentch are Battleline, meaning if you like, you can have an army made almost exclusively of these fire-spewing monstrosities! What’s more, they’ll be capable of chewing through even the heaviest of armour thanks to the Twisters of Materiality ability.

tzeentch change coven scions of the exiledThis one is really interesting. If you’re a fan of bullying others with big models in Age of Sigmar, you can take a Change Coven that can ONLY summon Lords of Change. And they get them at a very discounted cost. In fact, the first one only costs 9 points…Which you can then immediately throw him on the table, which we talked about earlier. WOW.

While there have only been two Change Coven rules revealed, there is plenty more in store for the sub-factions.

With six cults to choose from, each with their own ability, command ability, command trait and artefact of power, you’ll be able to add more variety to your Tzeentch armies than ever before.

Notable Warscroll Card Changes

pink-horror hor daemon chaosHorrors splitting mechanic have been streamlined for faster games. GW also gave a helping hand to those who don’t have the smaller models that come from popping a bigger Horror.

Every time a Pink Horror is slain, you add two Blue Horrors to the unit. Every time a Blue Horror is slain, you get a base of Brimstone Horrors. Don’t have the models? Don’t worry! You can choose to inflict mortal wounds instead. The cost of Horrors has been upped to compensate for this, but these spell-slinging nesting dolls wreak more arcane havoc than ever before.

tzeentch gestalt sorceryKairic Acolytes, the mortals on the side of Tzeentch, have had an ability turned into a spell. You only need to roll a 6 for it to go off, however, the payoff is dope with an additional rend.

Magister on Disc of Tzeentch Unit

aether war tzeentch

tzeentch bolt of changeAs an awesome support/harassing unit, the new Magister on Disc of Tzeentch an awesome mobile hero to throw in. Movement is key in AoS as most every decent damage-dealing weapon is from melee. He’ll be able to turn things into Chaos Spawns and then zip up to an objective that might be out of reach from other units.

All in all, what are your thoughts on the revamped Tzeentch rules? Does spamming Lords of Change appeal to you? How do you think they’ll do against Keeper of Secrets spam lists?
