Don’t miss the top 3 40k army lists from the first 9th Edition GT last weekend, as a new competitive meta starts to take shape.
The results on one of 9th Edition’s first-ever tournaments are in. Coming from the Wizards Asylum GT, we have a looks at three lists that may be beginning to shape the meta for 40k tournament play. Let’s dive in.
The Top 3 40k Army Lists from the first 9th Edition GT
9th Edition 40k is brand new and we’ve already gotten the first results from a GT. Thanks to Best Coast Pairings we are able to look back at the event as if we were there ourselves.
3rd Place: Ben Cherwien- Grey Knights
Starting off this Grey Knight list came in third bringing three Grand Master Dreadknights into play. It’s nice to see that even in a new edition, a Warlord Trait that rerolls charges is still the most popular one to pick from out of the codex.
Next, Terminators filled all of the obligatory Troops roles with each squad given a warding staff for that sweet +1 invuln save when they made it into combat. Each one had their own psychic power as well which came down to the game on how they were used. But these guys were definitely the backbone of the list.
Finally, Voldus and Draigo appeared in a Patrol Detachment along with yet another Terminator squad. Overall, this was a solid list that had a surprising amount of characters backed by loads of Terminators. Nice job!
2nd Place: Aaron Cook- Adeptus Custodes
So Custodes lead off with a Sheild Captain on Bike and Trajann leading a Battalion full of Custodian Guard. Each unit was given two spears and a sentinel blade/storm shield for a little bit of staying power. Dumping nearly a quarter of the list’s points into some Allarus Custudes this big squad was given a ballistus grenade launcher and castellan axe for ranged and melee slappage. A Vexillus Praetor with the -1 to hit bubble also hit the board to add a little extra protection.
Finally, we had a Telemon double down on shooting with two arachnus storm cannons and a Callidus to help disrupt the early game. Sweet list. We will say as well, it’s surprising to see that this list also had nearly 60 pts left over to use but still managed to come in one of the top placings!
1st Place: Dan Sammons- Sisters & Imperial Fists
Dan rolled out a soup list of Sisters of Battle and Imperial Fists. To give you the quick rundown, two Repentia bombs (who hit like a ton of bricks in combat) we loaded into two Rhinos and raced forward.
For the rest of the girls, they were placed around the Battle Sanctum which allowed them to be in cover, gain a miracle dice per turn, and boost their leadership a bit.
Moving into the Imperial Fists, a Vanguard was taken with a Techmarine following behind three Contemptors geared with a twin lascannon and missiles while one arm was freed up to hand out close combat slaps in case something tried to get froggy. Being a relic unit, other Elites had to be taken so some Servitors and a squad of Bladeguard filled that hole. On top of that, some Eradicators mixed with a Sisters Seraphin squad hunted tanks all game. Awesome list!
Hopefully, this has been a bit of an eye-opener for people beginning to wonder where the 9th Edition meta is going. Overall, it seems like Battalions are still great as having troops to hold objectives is paramount. On that note, however, it seems like some units like Terminators and Dreadnoughts have also been made more appealing.
