Forge World lost a rules writer recently but according to all accounts, the Horus Heresy (or 30k as some call it) lives on!
The Horus Heresy writing team, for rules and narrative, has been primarily made up of two people for the past few years. With Anuj Malhota announcing his departure from the team, that leaves Neil Wylie as the sole man on the job right now.
No news yet of whether or not they will be replacing him or just going forward as a one-man operation. If you love Anuj’s work, don’t worry, at least not for a while. Because he stated that they work years in advance, so you’ll see his hand in stuff for some time still.
For a while in the past, Anuj was the only person working on releases, so moving forward there is a chance we see just a one-man operation for some time. He has total faith in Neil, so that’s as good of an endorsement as you’ll get!
Forge World Rules Writer Leaves, but Horus Heresy Lives On…
Let’s hear a little from the man himself about it:
It’s great to hear he’ll stay on in the game as a playtester! If you want to see his whole statement on the departure, you can check it out here. With him leaving, what does the future hold for the game?

Moving Forward
Last year, they skipped the Horus Heresy weekender in February (pre-covid, to double down on development). So we hope this year, even though it won’t be in person, we’ll get some great releases (hopefully)!
2020 is set to be an even better year for The Horus Heresy, and the game’s designers are already working hard to produce a year’s worth of incredible content! In fact, they’re so busy that they won’t be running a Horus Heresy Weekender in 2020 – they’re devoting the time that goes into organising and running such an event into creating more epic books and models instead.
With the game still a couple of editions behind, and having some serious differences to 40k, like blast templates, it seems due for an update in theory, but maybe not in the spirit of the game itself?
We hope with all the work they put together, we get a great weekender this year. But if it has to be online since it’s in February, who knows what will get released. If you want to see more about the Weekenders, check it out here.
Some people like The Horus Heresy for the reason it is still so different from 40k. It harkens back to an earlier play style and has such a different feel. So we’ll just have to wait and see if they give the game a major update or are taking it in another direction.
Either way, the game looks like it will keep going for years to come.
What do you think about his departure? Do you want the game to get a major update and possibly rehauled?
