40k-homebrew-army-listsTwo more off-meta 40k army lists emerged in the 2021 Clutch City GT Tournament, check these ones out!

9th Edition’s meta is still settling, but some players are taking lists with units that nobody was expecting. Check out these awesome homebrew lists that emerged in a tournament over the weekend. They didn’t do too bad and just goes to show that sometimes it’s more about the general’s skill than what you play.

2021 Clutch City GT: William Abilez- Tau

First, up for William’s Tau list was a Vior’la Patrol led by Aun’Shi, who can provide rerolls to stationary infantry and battlesuits in the shooting phase. With that in mind, there are 20 breachers and 14 Kroot for some decent bodies to grab objectives and deal some ranged damage in a pinch. There is also a Devilfish to transport a squad of breachers and two drones, to help protect them while they move up the board.

The Second Detachment is Farsight Enclaves lead by a Coldstar Commander, who has a ton of mobility and a decent amount of shots to help clear chaff where needed. There is also a total of 20 more Breachers, once again providing decent bodies to help grab objectives and add a few more shots in the shooting phase.

clutch city tau 3As for Elites, there is an Ion Accelerator Riptide, which offers full board range, and with the rerolls from Aun’Shi is at minimal risk of taking mortals from rolling 1s to hit. There are also a total of 6 Stealth Battlesuits, who can deep strike in and help manta hold units get closer to enemy lines with a homing beacon.

They are also pretty tough with a -1 to hit and a total of 4 shots each for a decent volume of shots. The last elite is a Ghostkeel, which has an Ion Raker, providing more anti-armor shots and similarly to the stealth suits, also has a -1 to hit and can deep strike in.

clutch city tau 4Fast attacks see a single squad of 5 pathfinders, providing a few extra bodies, and a Y’vahra, which got a points bump when the Forge World compendium came out. It may still be good enough as William believes and it clearly got decent results for him. That flamer might still be the hotness with 3d6 auto hit shots at 12″ range. Finally, there is a single additional devilfish for another squad of bodies to ride in along with 2 drones.

2021 Clutch City GT: Jon Camacho- Imperium

Jon’s take on Imperium soup is really mostly Custodes but has a unique flavor to it: A ton of Dreadnoughts. The Detachment is led by Shield captain on foot which is extremely durable, but they also give you rerolls of 1 to nearby troops- not just core (for now).

Elites see two Twin Destructor Achillus which when they hit can pop a marine for every shot, or target vehicles and have a total potential of 8 shots at S5, -3 AP, 3 Damage. Another Achillus Dread is running Storm Bolters instead which trade of to S5, -1AP, 1D for double range and rapid-fire, making it much better against chaff.

Two more Dreadnoughts are the Galatus variant, which has flamers and decent mele weapons, making them good at clearing chaff or taking on bigger threats if they get into melee. Another important thing to note about these dreads is how durable they are. Each of these have great saves, Invulns, and a decent amount of wounds, making them pretty effective mobile weapon platforms. Plus the Galatus has a built-in -1 to hit even!

There is also a Vexilus Praetor which gives Custodes with 6″ -1 to hit when being shot at.

The Dreads aren’t done yet. The Heavy Supports see 2 Telemon Heavy Dreads join the list as well. Both running a Storm Cannon and Caestus. This loadout gives them great antiarmor ranges weapons and essential a supercharged Powerfist in cast they need to wipe out something in the fight phase.

He also added a Callidus to mess with his opponent’s CP situation.

Starting the second detachment, Jon goes for a Patrol of Astra Milatarum Scions led a Tempestor Prime. The Callidus is a decent standalone unit with the benefit of maybe forcing your opponent to use extra CP. The Tempestor serves as a cheap HQ option that can deep strike in when needed.

Troops see a total of 15 Tempestus Scions to help grab objectives while the Dreadnoughts are running around making havoc on the battlefield. A singles squad of 4 Melta Scions helps by adding a few more objective-grabbing bodies and a touch of antiarmor shots.

Overall these lists offer a little bit of a different approach but we like it because of their all-in on an aspect of their faction in a response to the meta.

Even better they got great results from the player who piloted it! It’s also very encouraging when a player is able to play a widely considered “underpowered” army or list style so effectively.
