Sony & Spider-Man Movies Coming to Disney+

disney+ sony (2)A new deal has been struck with Sony, which means all the Spider-Man movies and more are coming to Disney+ fairly soon- check it out!

If you’ve been wanting to watch all the Sony Spider-Man and Sony movies on Disney+, you won’t have to wait too much longer! Variety reported the massive deal, which will start with Sony’s theatrical releases in 2022 and run through 2026. But Disney isn’t the only one getting new access to movies, a large portion of titles will make their way to Hulu in June. While FX, ABC, and Freefrom will also be grabbing some titles as well.

This comes on the heels of the Sony and Netflix deal, where Netflix will grab their releases about nine months after the theatrical release. This is great news if you’ve been eyeing up any of Sony’s releases because they’ll be streaming before too long after the release.

Spider-Man Movies Coming to Disney+

Spiderman feature rThis is a serious turnaround because Spider-Man was almost kicked out of the MCU after a turbulent 2019. With this most recent deal, Disney now has collected almost all the MCU rights, minus the Incredible Hulk, which is still owned by Universal. Chuck Saftler, the head of business operations for ABC, Freeform, FX Networks, and Acquisitions for Disney’s Media and Entertainment Distribution had this to say about the deal:

This landmark multi-year, platform-agnostic agreement guarantees the team at Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution a tremendous amount of flexibility and breadth of programming possibilities to leverage Sony’s rich slate of award-winning action and family films across our direct-to-consumer services and linear channels. This is a win for fans, who will benefit from the ability to access the very best content from two of Hollywood’s most prolific studios across a multitude of viewing platforms and experiences.

disney+ sonyThe only issue here is this is only for the U.S. markets, despite the streaming platforms being global. They didn’t say quite yet if the global audience will benefit from this in a later deal or not, but let’s hope so!

This deal is quite complex just because of the scope it covers, but it looks like Sony will make about $3 Billion in just licensing rights for the six-year deal. Start looking for movies coming in June, but this is a big step in the direction of giving streaming platforms ever more titles.

Are you excited about the deal? Will you be waiting for the releases to hit Netflix or still go to theaters to see them?
