Flesh and Blood TCG tops MTG for sales for the second month, which is a really big accomplishment- check it out!
Trading card games tend to generally stay pretty linear growth-wise traditionally, but topping Magic is a seriously giant achievement. This is also reminiscent of when Magic was first coming up all those years ago when you start looking at production numbers as well.
For most of us, Magic has always been the top dog, but when the game was really first coming up, its explosive growth on the market and into the mainstream was quite a spectacle. Now, Flesh and Blood may be doing the same thing to Magic!
It is the latest new shiny thing out there, but could this trend continue?
Flesh & Blood TCG Tops Magic The Gathering Again
First up, TCGPlayer seems like a really cool company as they recently donated $75,000 in conjunction with the makers or Flesh and Blood to local game stores.
Then when TCGplayer recently released their September sealed product sales and it shows some very promising things. While they did see a big drop off in prices for the first edition run boxes, it’s probably due to the market settling on what the cards are actually worth.
So how did they top Magic the Gatherings sales?
It could be due to a few things, first, the campaign they ran to help game stores really gave them a ton of great press and they ran a DTC campaign which was pretty awesome.
The second may be its sealed box value on the collector’s market. A first edition box of the new FNB set is going for around $100. This however is a big dropoff from the previous set price of $1836.31. As we said before though, this probably has nothing to do with the game falling off and more the market trying to understand the real price and the expanding print runs of cards coming.
So, with another run, it means the first edition becomes more collector-focused as the regular player doesn’t care as much and the price is more attainable. Having the highest sales for two months is not something to be taken lightly in the TCG world. It’s an extremely competitive market, so for an original game to come on top is awesome. However, it’s not just them doing well, it also has to do with MTG themselves.
Magic the Gathering Smaller Sales
The Midnight Hunt offering from Wizards did also have noticeably low pre-order sales than normal. This is a huge factor, but recently, there have been some unfortunate things they have been doing as well. So we’re not saying this is a trend to count on, but with them confirming the Reserve List, hurting local stores, and getting rid of the pro scene have all been pretty recent developments that might be hurting interest in the game ovreall
When we say hurting, we don’t mean disappearing, there might just be a new head honcho around, sort of like when X-Wing took the stop spot from Warhammer 40k for a long run before GW “changed” back in 2016.
We’re not sure if FNB can keep taking down Magic, but who knows, maybe Magic is getting “magic-ed” by Flesh and Blood, and one day they will be topping the charts all the time.
