The bad news from USPS doesn’t seem to be stopping any time soon as new standards could slow down packages.
Just last week we saw that USPS will be increasing shipping rates and even suspending shipments to Australia last month, and now New Zealand as well. These new service standards went into effect on Oct 1st here in the states!
This could really slow down shipping for tons of people. While they say it might not change much, a Washington Post analyst said this could easily affect 5 billion pieces of mail. Hurrah, right before the holidays… Whether you plan on buying a lot this year, or ship a lot of products, beware because this could really slow shipments down.

Forbes broke the news on this. So, what’s happening? First off, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has been talking about this plan since March and it’s been pretty planned from the beginning.
The new plan is a way to cut costs through a few different installments. Let’s see how the changes will actually change the way packages are shipped:
- Transit times will be increased for all first-class mail traveling longer distances.
- As part of the 10-year plan, they will cut costs by transporting first-class mail through trucks, not airplanes which is the standard now.
- USPS is claiming that 61% of first-class mail and 93% of periodicals would not be disrupted by the changes.
We’ll have to see how much this will affect shipping, but after the recent price increase, we imagine shippers aren’t too happy either way. Let’s hope it doesn’t make getting or sending packages over the holidays a serious issue.
