Top Warhammer 40k Army Lists: Frontline SoCal Open

40k-army-lists-freshThe Frontline Gaming SoCal Open happened over the weekend with some pretty sweet 40k army lists towards the top!

The top overall players were a lot of the same stagnant meta that has hung over tournaments like the ghost of the Knight Castellan, so we’re featuring some of the more unique lists that placed high instead!

Thanks to Best Coast Pairings we are able to look back at the event as if we were there ourselves. You can check out the details for the event here.

If you wanted to see the names and factions of the overall winners, we’ve included that below.

However, we aren’t covering those lists, instead, we will be looking at the 2nd cut top lists for a little more variety, but still strong lists!

17th Place: Evan Stump – Deathwatch

socal open deathwatch 1Evan decided to go with a Deathwatch battalion led by a Lieutenant, a Primaris Captain, and a Primaris Techmarine. The Lieutenant provides wound re-rolls, while the Captain provides hit re-rolls making a very strong 6″ bubble around them.

The Techmarine on the other hand helps to make sure the lists vehicle are topped off to make sure you can continue to squeeze value out of them each turn.

Troops bring in 3 Proteus Kill Teams with Jump Packs for a total of 12 Shotgun Vets, 5 Vanguard Vets, with Chainswords and 1 Claw, and 10 Vet Bikers.

This selection with Jump Packs make for an extremely mobile troop suite, in fact, it might be one of the most mobile collection of troops in all of 40k! If you’ve played any objective-based games before, you’ll know that having more mobility than opponents can be a huge boon and win the game for you!

socal open deathwatch 3Elites bring in a ton of ranged firepower but start off with 2 COmpany Vets to soak up a few remaining points and get the list as close to 2k as possible. Next, there is 3 Redemptor Dreads all running double Gatling Cannons and 2 Storm Bolters to absolutely sweeping the enemy chaff units right off the table.

Finally, there are also 2 Relic Contemptors running 2 Twin Volkites, which primarily kill 2 wound models, but can also sneak in wounds on bigger high armor targets if they fail saves.

While 17th place doesn’t sound amazing… It’s important to recognize how massive this tournament was. It had over 200 players, and went for over 6 rounds! 17th of 200+ is much more impressive with that in mind.
