The Mid-MO Maelstrom happened over the weekend with some pretty sweet 40k army lists towards the top!
The top overall players were a lot of the same stagnant meta that has hung over tournaments like the ghost of the Knight Castellan, so we’re featuring some of the more unique lists that placed high instead!
Top Warhammer 40k Army Lists: Mid-MO Maelstrom
Thanks to Best Coast Pairings we are able to look back at the event as if we were there ourselves. You can check out the details for the event here.
If you wanted to see the names and factions of the overall winners, we’ve included that below.
However, we aren’t covering all those lists, instead, we will be looking at just a few of our favorite, but still strong lists!
7th Place: Steven Larson – Grey Knights
6th Place: Kyle McCord – Imperium
3rd Place: Geoffrey Husser – Deathwatch
Geoffrey decided to go with a battalion of Deathwatch led by a Captain, a Chaplain, and a Primaris Techmarine. The Captain provides hit re-rolls making a very strong 6″ bubble around them. While the Techmarine on the other hand helps to make sure the lists vehicle are topped off to make sure you can continue to squeeze value out of them each turn.
The Chaplain provides access to litanies which can be extremely powerful if used at the right time.
For the first Troop, we see a unit of Veterans going full melee mode with the hope of laying down the law in CQC while hopefully staying alive thanks to their storm shields.
The other 3 Troops take on a similar strategy with half of each squad taking storm shields to soak ranged fire and threaten melee damage with their lightning claws.
The other half of each squad is running Chainsword/Boltgun for a touch of ranged shots and a little extra melee damage if they need it. The Vanguard Vets are also running jump packs for that extremely important mobility boost.
The first Elites are 2 Company vets for some cheap bodies that still can threaten melee pushes thanks to their load-outs.
There is also a second identical unit of Vets to get the list as close to 2k as possible, and of course, getting a few more melee threats.
Elites finish with 3 Twin Volkite Contemptors, which primarily kill 2 wound models, but can also sneak in wounds on bigger high armor targets if they fail saves. Meaning these mobile platforms can serve as a sort of all-purpose ranged threat.
The final unit is a Whirlwind, which serves as a good chaff-clearer thanks to the blast trait and decent shot count every turn.
