Goobertown Speedpaints rIn this Army Painter Speed Paint review, Goobertown covers how they work, which are his favorite, and what he doesn’t like- check it out!

Goobertown Hobbies is a great content creator who has interesting takes on the hobby. Whether it’s a collaboration with other hobby YouTubers or a challenge for himself, he has a broad range of topics he covers. Since he has so much great content, why not check out what else he has done?

This week he is doing something a little different. He’s doing an honest review of the new Army Painter Speed Paint. He also shows how they work with and without primer, that way you can decide if they are worth your hard-earned hobby dollars. Let’s get into it!

Army Painter Speedpaints Review: Goobertown Hobbies

Speedpaints ReviewObviously, all the paints he is using are from the Army Painter and the Speedpaints sets just hit pre-order! He has the Mega Set, so he has all 23 colors! Let’s see what he thinks. Just to note, they gave him this to review, but he will still give an honest review as he is under no obligation to give a good review.

Over a White Base Coat

Speedpaints Review 3All you have to do is slap it on and the Speedpaint pretty much does all the work for you. It fills in the deeper gaps with a darker color and leaves the higher areas lighter. For the primer, he uses The Army Painter White with a few thin layers, but you don’t have to use their primer. If it is pooling, he uses a big brush to get the pools out. that’s pretty much all you need to know. It’s really simple and he did it over both a Matt White and a Gloss White. You can see how they turned out above! As you can see there are almost no spots where the paint didn’t cover, he really enjoys how it looks over a white prime.

Over a Metal Model With Bright Metallic Silver

Speedpaints Review 4To experiment, he wants to see how it would look over a bright silver, he uses the Vallejo Silver here, but you can also do this with the Army Painter one as well. He also speeds up the drying process on camera to see how it dries. He even left a bunch of big pools to see how it works. It actually helps because you can see that it doesn’t need much as it dries pretty well and uniformly. He was quite surprised by how well it dries over time.

If you do it this time, it will take about an hour to dry. But you can always use the brush to get rid of the pools. There are some pretty opaque spots, and that’s the worst part, but even that isn’t bad.

Speedpaints Review 5From the looks of it, the neutral colors will probably be more useful than the bright ones, but they are good to have in the toolbox when you need them. He then goes into the science behind the paints and really highlights how much work The Army Painter put into these paints. Because they were able to get great coverage no matter the type of pigment. Whereas something like Contrast Paints is known for having inconsistencies depending on which paint you use, and how they cover.

Painting With Multiple Layers

Speedpaints Review 6If you don’t get the coverage you want with one layer, you can always do multiple coats and you can see how it builds the color. However, it does take a while to dry, so you have to wait a long time before reapplying, he waited a full 8 hours for these.

Speedpaints Review 7If you want to have a lighter color you can add in a thinning agent, for this, he used the medium that comes in the set, however, he would only use this when using Speedpaints, it doesn’t seem to work well with other paints. This works really well as you can see above as the color gets continually thinned out.

Through an Airbrush

Speedpaints Review 8It works really well if you just want to tint your models, or if you go full force, you can get really good coverage either way. You can see above how both types of airbrushing work.

Black Priming & Zenithal

Speedpaints Review 9It works really well with just a black primer, but when you do it with a more Zenithal highlight, the contrast really pops. As you can see above, this isn’t that much work and it really gives you an amazing place to start your full paint job from.

Painting a Full Model

Speedpaints Review 10You will have to test some of the paints because they work a little differently when used on just small surfaces like this. However, they are pretty forgiving and with a little bit of testing, you’ll be good to go! Some of his models turned out a bit wonky, but that’s mainly because he doesn’t know the paints that well.

He thinks with a little more testing he’ll be really good to go. Plus for the price, these are much more affordable than Contrast, so with that in mind and how they work, they are hard to beat! One last thing to take into account, they come in dropper bottles, which are just much better than contrast paints.
