Lone Star Open: Top 40k Homebrew Army List

40k-homebrew-army-listsNurgle and his favorite legion are still in competitive play as a new homebrew Warhammer 40k army list emerged at the huge Lone Star Open!

9th Edition’s meta is again in flux, but some players take lists with units that nobody expected. Check out this awesome homebrew list that emerged in a tournament over the weekend. This shows us that sometimes it’s more about the general’s skill than what you play.

Thanks to Best Coast Pairings, we can look back at the event as if we were all there ourselves.

If you wanted to see the names and factions of the overall winners, we’ve included that below.

However, we aren’t covering all those lists. Instead, we will look at just one of our favorites this week.

Lone Star Open: Robert Hawkins – Nurgle 5th Place

Robert Hawkins 1Starting off with a pretty standard approach, Robert has a battalion of Death Guard, which have been a pretty consistent faction for experienced devotees of Nurgle. His Battalion is led by a Daemon Prince and a Malignant Plaguecaster. The Daemon Prince is a fantastic model with good durability, utility, mobility, and combat power. He really is the all-in-one package!

The Plaguecaster, on the other hand, is a dedicated psyker with some built-in mortal wound special rules.

Troops bring 10 Cultists and 20 Poxwalkers for chaff units that can soak some wounds or sit on an objective. There are also 6 Plague marines, which are decent bodies with a diverse set of loadout options that are fairly durable thanks to their blessings from papa Nurgle.

Elites have a tallyman for some extra CP generation, a Foul Blightspawn, his fight last ability, and a fantastic flamer weapon.

Fast Attacks bring in 3 Bloat Drones with Fleshmowers, which act as mini-Daemon Princes with all of the melee power and none of the utility, which is still a huge positive!

Closing out the battalion are 2 Plagueburst Crawlers, which are staples for Death Guard as they can consistently deal damage all game long.

Robert Hawkins 3

The next Detachment is just for Mortarion, who is another all-in-one threat with a ton of utility and acting as a massive melee threat that can go toe-to-toe with any model in the game. He is a prime example of something that is just too good not to play if you can spare the points.

The unique part of this list is the Daemon Reinforcements bringing in Epidemius and a Poxbringer for additional support. These aren’t insane inclusions, but it’s neat to see a unique twist that clearly worked out in Robert’s favor!
