The Risky Rollers Open: Top 40k Homebrew Army List

40k-homebrew-army-listsBorderline vampires take the stage as a new homebrew Blood Angels Warhammer 40k army list emerged at the Risky Rollers Open!

9th Edition’s meta is again in flux, but some players take lists with units that nobody expected. Check out this awesome homebrew list that emerged in a tournament over the weekend. This shows us that sometimes it’s more about the general’s skill than what you play.

Thanks to Best Coast Pairings, we can look back at the event as if we were all there ourselves. Check out the event details here.

If you wanted to see the names and factions of the overall winners, we’ve included that below.

However, we aren’t covering all those lists. Instead, we will look at just one of our favorites this week.

The Risky Rollers Open: Ben Kunstler – Blood Angels 4th Place

Ben Kunstler 1

Ben had a great run with this Blood Angels setup of his, just barely missing out on the top 3. He went with a single Battalion led by a Chaplain for the litany support along with a Sanguinary Priest for the benefit of healing nearby units and even giving them a 6+ FNP.

Troops keep it simple with 10 Assault Intercessors, which are slightly better in melee, and 5 Incursors, which are better at ranged combat. These aren’t too special and are, for the most part, just fodder.

The real meat and potatoes are in the Elites!

For Elites, they start with 5 Death Company Marines running Thunder Hammers, which makes them a huge threat in melee if they can make the charge with all their models. There is also a Sanguinary Ancient and 18 Sanguinary Guard.

The Ancient provides a great +1 to hit aura and a shoot-before-death rule that is just fantastic. On top of that, the Sanguinary Guard are fantastic mobile models with great shooting and melee power.

Wrapping up that category, there is a 10-man Jump pack Vet squad running a mix of claws, shields, and hammer, making for a mobile unit of some serious hurt in melee that can pretty much delete anything in the game if they are at full strength on the charge.

Fast Attacks bring in 2 Assault squads with Jump packs for even more mobility and the flexibility that comes with it.

Then finally, the list closes out with a Whirlwind, which helps with clearing chaff out of the way from range, making room for the lists’ melee threats to charge the important targets.
