Here’s how Games Workshop is attacking the scalpers for the 10th Edition Leviathan starter box and hopefully letting more gamers get it!
We’ve been pretty tough on GW when it comes to new releases, as more often than not, you end up having to go to the secondary market for big releases (we’re looking at you, Lion). However, with the 10th Edition starter, they are actually putting in a decent number of measures to keep the scalpers at bay.
How GW is Attacking Scalpers For the Leviathan 40k Box Release
Let’s start with the measures GW announced.
This is the launch box for the new edition of Warhammer 40,000, the biggest Warhammer release in history. The pre-order window will be open for two weeks, and this set will be available strictly while stocks last – but don’t worry, we have made a mind-boggling quantity!
Ahead of what we expect to be quite a busy pre-order period, we are installing a queuing system with a limited quantity available per customer. You’ll be able to pre-order at the following times in your area:
Remember the Queue? From when GW re-opened its webstore after locking down the first time? Well, it is back, and it’s designed to give the maximum number of hobbyists a chance to get the limited-edition items they want while simultaneously thwarting scalpers.
Games Workshop has been mum about the latest iteration of this website feature, so let’s first go back to a couple of years ago when they rolled out something similar for a brief explanation.
The queue is set up so access will be on a first come, first served basis and will appear as a holding page that will let you know how long your wait will likely be. It’ll remember your place too, so you can wander off to brew yourself a nice cup of recaff, take a wander around your living room or count your paints… and your place in the queue will remain secure.
It’s been a while since they did the queue, but this is what it looked like last time when Dominion dropped. They give you an estimated wait time, and as long as you keep your computer open, you should keep your spot. The last time they did this, it seemed only like the USA got the queue, but we expect them to be tighter with 10th Edition.
Will There Be Enough Boxes of Leviathan To Go Around?
Next up, they say they made a boat ton of boxes, and we haven’t heard terrible allocations from stores yet, so who knows? Maybe they really did make enough this time around. More importantly, though, they are limiting how many boxes each customer can order.
So, even if someone wanted to scalp them, they would have to have multiple people (or bots) waiting in queue to get them, but that’s nothing too crazy. They also haven’t said how limited quite yet, but maybe we’ll have to get in the queue before we can see how many you can buy.
Last but not least, they are running times when each country can pre-order. If you’re in the USA, keep in mind that’s 10 AM Pacific Time, meaning if you’re on the east coast, you’ll have to carve out some time at 1 PM like normal.
It’s nice to see GW taking these anti-scalper methods, as so many of their most recent releases have been plagued by low production runs and scalpers.
