Warhammer+ Plus Banned in Canada

warhammer+-plus-banned-canadaWarhammer+ Plus has supposedly been banned in Canada for new subscriptions, and rumors say renewals won’t work soon.

It looks like new legislation is stopping most hobbyists in Canada from subscribing to the Warhammer+ Plus. This is frustrating for more than one reason, as you have to subscribe to the app to actually get the army builder portion of the 40k app, get the new miniatures, and of course, watch the animations.

This Legislation has already received a ton of controversy, but from the looks of it, Games Workshop is also being affected. Just to note, this isn’t really GW’s fault. There seem to be some pretty tricky waters to navigate here…

There is a new Bill 96 (the Quebec Language Law) that requires bilingual language usage on all apps, and it appears GW doesn’t have the necessary requirements. If you are in Canada and are already subscribed, it looks like you can access the app currently, but when you go to re-up, access may be blocked.

We’ve heard from some Canadian readers directly, and according to Reddit, it appears many people are having the same problems.

Coming from Reddit, this is an email someone received from GW, and while they mention the residents of Quebec, even people on the west coast and other areas of Canada cannot access the mywarhammer.com site. According to this, hobbyists who are already subbed cannot go on the site either.

Can anyone try and access this website from Canada? It appears GW have blocked access to the Warhammer+ subscription (or upgrade) page for ALL Canadians due to a policy change in Quebec that only affects that province.

The issue seems to be that it’s tied to a streaming service; if it were just an app, there might not be the same issues.

It seems it might also be more than just Bill 96 as well. From littleplasticwardollies it appears the Bill C-11 is requiring more Canadian-centric content, and the Warhammer app doesn’t have it. This could mean that GW would have to add more of that content to actually be able to have a streaming service there.

This is quite a limiting law and could easily have far bigger issues than just Warhammer+, but for now, it seems like GW has some serious hurdles to overcome to get it there as they might not just have to get around Bill 96 but also C-11.

One subscriber mentioned that GW told him they are trying to uncouple the streaming app and the army builder.

Again, if you have a subscription, watch all the animations you’ve been waiting on because soon you might be unable to… and start looking at alternative army builder apps. There are some free options out there that should still work in Canada, which you can check out below.
