Warhammer 40k, the iconic tabletop wargame by Games Workshop, brings the science-fiction universe of the 41st millennium to life through exquisitely detailed miniatures. These miniatures serve as the heart of the game, representing armies, heroes, and monstrous creatures, each with its unique characteristics and playstyles. The scale of Warhammer 40k miniatures plays a vital role in creating an immersive and captivating gaming experience for players.

What Scale is Warhammer 40k Miniatures on the Tabletop?

Imperial Guard Cadian Upgrade Sprue 5Warhammer 40k miniatures are typically constructed at a standardized scale of 28mm heroic scale, which means that the miniatures are approximately 28mm tall, with the term “heroic scale” aspect referring to the slightly exaggerated proportions of the models (larger heads and more prominent weapons,  adds to their visual impact and tabletop visibility). Variations exist depending on the faction and type of miniature, some would even argue that with the introduction of Primaris Space Marines, the sizing has crept up to more of a 32mm “heroic” scale.

What is the 28mm Heroic Scale?

leviathan space marinesThe 28mm heroic scale is the standard size used for Warhammer 40k miniatures and is called this because of the exaggerated proportions, aka they are not “true scale,” meaning not like a person scaled down to miniature size. This means the height of all models is based on the 28mm scale (with things like tanks, Dreadnoughts, Orks, and Tyranids being much bigger), with slightly exaggerated proportions. This scale enhances the visual impact of the miniatures and even makes them stand out on the tabletop terrain during battles.

Tabletop & Gaming Board Size

Warhammer 40k games are typically played on tabletops that may vary in size. Usually, they are in the range of 4’x4′ (for smaller games) to 44″ x 60″ (standard for 2,000-point games). This relatively compact playing area adds to the intensity of battles. Moreover, it forces players to make strategic decisions within a limited space. The 28mm scale of the miniatures strikes a balance between providing enough detail for immersive gameplay while also allowing for maneuverability on the tabletop terrain. But, you need to be sure to use enough terrain so the minis can have somewhere to hide. After all, there are usually some big guns on the board!

What Kind of Terrain is Suitable for Warhammer 40k Games?

One of the defining features of Warhammer 40k miniatures is the astonishing level of detail found in each model.  This level of craftsmanship always enhances the aesthetic of the models and games. On top of that, it allows players to immerse themselves in the rich narrative and lore of the game. As seen above, you can also add weapon effect bits from companies like Deadly Print Studios.

Leviathan 10th Edition Starter box 16Warhammer 40k Miniatures come unassembled and unpainted, allowing you to personalize and paint them to your liking. Painting your miniatures is a fundamental aspect of the hobby and provides an opportunity for creative expression.
